Since all of these silly this vs that in the same caliber have been popping up, I realized my collection is severley lacking in 30's, of ANY size. I have such a need to run away from the bandwagon it borders on a variation of OCD.

I have been wanting to add a few new rifles to the cabinets, a 218 Bee or similar, and a 30 of some sort. The more I read, the more I love the Ackley line.

Does anyone here have a lot of experience with the 30-06 AI? I think that is going to be my next Fancy wood, deep blued, european descent, centrefire bragging piece adorned with a Diavari or something similar.

It is nice. Fireforming is a bit of a pain. Actually a significant pain. I haven't done and chronographing of the chambering, but will do so this spring. IMO it is a good way to clean up a worn .30-06, but I wouldn't bother if I was starting fresh.

If you want something different, and classy, the it is hard to beat the .300 H&H - if you are looking for a .308".

If you want to go through the case forming process, then another neat option is the .318 Westley-Richards. Although that is not much more than a .338-06 with extra hassle.

What about a 30 Newton? I haven't seen one of those yet either? Or maybe I'll just go 308 NM.... bah... why is it always so hard to pick one!

Very true, I was already thinking the 300 H&H would be the way to go in a Schutz n Larssen or a Mannlicher Schoenauer or Steyr, or Verney Carron etc....

Keep in mind that you need a 3.60" magazine, and it may be a problem, especially with the Mannlicher-Schoenauer. If you want high end, why not build on a Granite Mountain Arms or Satterlee Magnum Mauser?

Eh, mid to high end, dont want to get too crazy.... I want to actually use it, and not be too afraid of scratchin it up! Wish I lived closer to civilization... would be nice to handle a few different rifles mentioned. I don't think anyone around here would own one of these, around here most people think a good rifle is an axis, and a top end is a Browning.

I only know of three people within 200 km's that even know what a Sauer or Steyr is, one guy I was taking to insisted that a Steyr is an automatic pistol from WW2, and when I said Sauer, he told me "it's Sig Sauer you moron, and thats a pistol too!"

Well you could get a Montana 1999, McMillan or Brown Precision stock, and a high quality barrel and Bob's your uncle.

My uncle Bob lives in Winnipeg..... how did you know he was my uncle?

Back on topic, not a bad suggestion 1899.... other than I love my fancy walnut in the classic calibers. I do own a few syntetic rifles, but those are my go to hunting rifles. Since I hunt a lot with my 325 WSM, I cant see what any 300 mag can do that I can not with either the 325, or the 7mmSTW, starting to rethink this, maybe a 375 H&H in a Kimber or Cooper? I know one is/was a spin off of the other, any opinions on those two makers?

I've never owned a Kimber or Cooper, so I can't say. Mcmillan makes a McWoody now...

40 deg of the shoulder on the Ackley line is to much of the good thing for the hunting cartridge IMHO. I am all for the less taper for the brass case but 28-30 deg of a RCBS line would allow slightly smoother feeding. 15 years ago or so I build friend of mine 30deg 30-06 RCBS imp version on Rem 700 action with fluted heavy 23" long former slightly used Sportco 44 barrel and he can shoot 180 Barnes X bullets at honest 2900FPS with 62,5 gr of Norma 205 (? IIRC, he is useing Rl 22 now) into 3/4" at 100m all day and not a hint of hard chambering. Feeding rails weren't touched either. We did put the target on fir tree and all three bullets penetrated it....all 24" of it!

I hadn't even considered the feeding smoothness, very very good point.

Back to the H&H it seems, or another wildcat....

My friend's .30-06 AI on a rechambered old Remington M700 BDL feeds very well. Dennis Sorensen did the smithing.
