30-06 How many is too many?

Yup, It is one of the most useful, easist to load for, great hunting and Target round. I hate the mundane, but then one day a beautiful FN Mauser walked into my life, then a Rem model 30 express, then a Brno ZG47. Man I hate this cartridge :)

I have 4 30-06's in the safe. my main scoped hunting rifle a tikka t3 blued topped with a zeiss and B&C stock, a light weight tikka battue open sight for when im gonna backpack hunt need only the essentials, the gf's tikka stainless and a combination 12g\30-06 over under.. not to mention we also have 2 308's in the safe also a ruger american loaner and another combination 12g\.308 over under. :)

Necropost. But I have the problem with 308's. This isn't even all of them.

You can only shoot one at a time...yet I always seem to end up with 4 or 5 in the safe (maybe 6.)

...and I just remembered another is on the way.

I am the same way with 308's but hey as lomg as they have different actions or models can you really have too many

Currently 3 but always looking, if I can find the right Mauser 98 I'd probably add that one as well

Pre-64 Model 70
Ruger 1A
Ruger 77

if you can afford it and it makes you happy who cares. I have a buddy who wants a 3006 and I'm looking around for one for him . thinking about a husky or a parker hale . I don't like most new stuff . no workmanship in it . I prefer 308 or 270 .. bad neck and back tell me forget the 06. had one many years ago . it was a cut down P17. very strong action . plus a Garand I wish I never sold .

I choose the 308 over the 30-06 myself. Nothing wrong with the 30-06, it's been around for a long time and is a very effective and proven cartridge. With 150-180gr bullets, I can't justify the slight edge the 30-06 has over the 308. If I wanted more I'd get another 300 WSM or 300 Win Mag.

It goes up and down with me; but usually 4. One’s a keepsake BAR that was my FIL’s and the rest are a Cooper and a couple 700s modded into culling guns. They make pretty good salt shakers out to 500 or; and don’t heat up that fast.

I had no interest in owning a 30-06 over 60 years ago... and have managed to get by all this time without ever having owned one.

I have one. When Dad passed away, I inherited his 'pride & joy', a Husqvarna model 4000 light weight with VERY nicely figured wood. A few years ago,;) going with a family theme, it got the call for a Mule Deer hunt on draw in Alberta with my Daughter and Son In Law. My Daughter has asked, when the time comes, if I'd consider passing it on to my Granddaughter. Agreed:), as she is one of the few 'right handers' in the family ranks.

The correct answer is always X+1 whereas X is the number you currently have

I just love that new math.
You always have to solve X.

I have 3, 243's so currently X=3
I also have 3, 257's again X=3
4, 30-30's, X=4

It's buying time again.

David

P.S. No need for a 30-06 for me, I have a boring 270.

An 06 was the 3rd large caliber rifle I owned, shot a couple of elk and deer with it then sold it off and never owned another for 40 years give or take. I did finally break down and bought another Rem 760 in 30-06 last year.....then for some reason I made a deal for another one yesterday with another fine CGNer....this time on a tang safety Ruger M77, I think that 2 will be it for the old war horse cartridge.
I do however have and use a couple of the 30-06's children including the 280 Rem, the 25-06, and the 35 Whelen.
As for the 308 Win.....I think they breed themselves because it seems they keep showing up in my safe.
