30-06 or 7mm

I have both, a remington 760 carbine 30 06 for the bush. The 7m Rem Mag for the longer shots. all depends where you are hunting.

True, here is your answer SuperCub. Whenever the hunting is close and personal the 30cal 220gr Partition trumps 284cal 175gr partition all the time b/c not only the moose lurks in the bush....

And the 140gr TTSX out of my 280AI,kills them just as dead, just as quickly.

The reply that steve62 was more of a reference to rifle type than chambering. A carbine 30/06 would very much be the better bush gun than a long/heavy 7mmMag.

OTOH ... As much as I like a heavier bullet, I doubt you'd see a big diff between a good 175gr 7mm and a heavy .308" at close range.

.30-06 is cheaper and you can find it everywhere.

And given the cost of licenses, fuel, and other gear, the cost difference isn't very significant. You can find 7mm remmag almost anywhere as well, but unless you are stupid enough to go hunting without extra rounds,it isn't a factor.

I've actually found, from my own limited experience, that in stores like walmart or Canadian Tire, 30-06 and 308 win are so popular that they're always sold out! :p Whereas there's usually a couple boxes of 7mmRM and 270 left. But yeah, you'll probably find both of them pretty much anywhere.

I agree with the range consideration. 300m or less, 30-06 with a shorter barrel. If you're planning for MOST of your shots to be farther than that, then 7mm, not because the 30 cal can't do it, but it'll probably be a little easier to learn the bullet drop with the 7mm. Odds are that you won't need that kind of range anyways.

Just got back from Chinese Tire with two boxes of 30-06. They had a huge selection. They also had an adequate selection of 7mm.
I own rifles in both calibres, and consider them to be equally effective. Slight advantage closer in with 30-06 with the heavier bullets, but 7mm is slightly better longer out. The moose won't care either way!

If you're thinking 7mm Rem Mag, go with the .30-06. Less felt recoil, muzzle blast and noise. Not that Bullwinkle will care.

depending on the rifle my little 30 06 kicks harder bangs louder than my 7m and has a muzzle flash that can burn the hair off what you are shooting.

The 30-06 has killed a lot of game,It is right in there with the 30-30 and 303 Br.(In Canada)I think for the 1 gun hunter it is very hard to beat the old and ture 30-06.

About as boreing as the "there's only one kind of dead posts?" :p All you're saying is that for something boreing, easy and within the capabilities of both there isn't much difference. That's largely true, if your looking for a 300 yard deer rifle there isn't a dimes worth of difference between the two.

When you start stretching things to their limits, things start changeing. How does a 7mm compare to an 30-06 stuffed with 220 or 240 grain woodleighs as a close range hammer on one ton animals? How about picking the best longrange bullets for both and trying a little 1/2 mile plinking in the wind? Now the 7s looking pretty good.

i have both and prefer the rem 7 mag. just personal prefernce as there isn't much difference between them. maybe the edge forlong range goes to the 7.
