30-06 or 7mm

I think both are a tad light, maybe for small whitetail you could get away with either, but for moose, you will need something at the minimum a .375 of some type, that is about the starting size for a moose rifle. :p

Seriously though this is like debating which vehicle will carry a gallon of milk better. They all will do it, it is just the style in which you get there. The 30-06 has more numbers the 7mm says "magnum". That is the only difference I see, either one will do just fine, go for the most comfortable rifle for you no matter WHAT the caliber choice.

There's not a whole lot of difference out to where most of us shoot,...or "should" shoot.

2-1/2" less drop at 400 to the 7 Mag.....and 300 ft lbs more energy...will it make a difference?...not really...and if you regularily shoot at game at 400 yards you're probably not shooting either one of these cartridges....but I prefer the 7 Mag with a 160 over the '06 with a 165....when you consider the BC of the bullet, the velocity, powder consumption and recoil, the 7 Mag is a winner in my book...but I do own one 30-06....a 1959 Model 70 Featherweight that I plan on keeping for a while.

I've sold every 30-06 i have owned. to me they are like bellybuttons, everybody has one.
30-06 is like a pickup truck compared to a sports car, the 7mm rem-mag is faster with bullets of equal sectional density. the only advantage the 30-06 has is it can be chambered in more action types with a shorter barrel.
so, if we narrow it down to bolt actions the big seven has it over the 30-06. the big seven is equally effective at short range and is better at long range. by how much, who cares?
its up to you to decide if the advantages of one over the other are enough to make you put your money down.
what type of terrain do you hunt in?
i hunt with the big seven.
take a close look at my avatar-234 yards on a dead run-2010 season.

Ford or Chevy?

What distance are you going to shoot?
Do you handload?

I would suggest both will make things deader than heck.

Do your research and become proficient with it.

Good hunting!

I enjoy these threads...a lot of ballistic masterbation over 24 thou of an inch and a few more grains of powder (on a critter that you probably whack under a 200 yards) Moose aren't invincible and with the selection of premium bullets kicking around nowadays, even lesser calibres are now considered effective moose medicine. They are both proven moose gitt'rs - pick the one you can comfortably shoulder and shoot.

From 0-300 yards- no difference

300- 600 yards- The 7RM gets the nod, due to better BC bullets and a bit higher velocity. Not that you can't make hits with a 30-06 at that range, though...

Other than that it depends on if you like the "I'm old school 100 year cool" of the 30-06 or if you are "I'm 5 decades old cool" of the 7RM

Most important is to PICK THE RIFLE YOU LIKE and buy it in whatever it is chambered in- .308, 270, 708, 3006, 7Rm etc

0-250 yards the '06 is superior. Feed it 200 grain or even 220 grain bullets and you have something no 7mm can do. Beyond 300 yards, I like the 7mm. Mind you, I have never shot a big game animal at over 300 yards, so that means ..............

From my personal experience I've never had a combination that knocked animals down like 175 mag tips or Grand slams out of a 7mm mag.

I've evan used a 300 weatherby mag and I prefer the 7mm.

Just my personal experiences. Other oppinions may vay

Nahh...The 7RM will kill the same...

With today's bullets, there is no situation where a 200gr or 220gr bullet is required in a 30-06. A properly constructed 150-180gr bullet will kill just as well, with less recoil, and a flatter trajectory. The 7mm remmag will do the same with a properly constructed 140gr to 175gr bullet.

Buy a 30-06 and a 7mmMag, see which one takes the moose down the quickest and put the one you don't like on the EE.
Wait a second, that never works out
You always want to keep your horde!
