well, I have my '06 sighted in at 4 1/2 high at 100..(yes, this is where I want it for long shots)..You would figure it would drop a couple by 200 (ie) 2 1/2 high at 100 usually means zeroed at 200.......but at the range this morning, it never..nice tight 1'' and less groups at 100, the same tight groups at 200 (never even opened up), and still 4 1/2 inches high:eek:..everything is tight, scope, rings, etc...trying to wonder why the shots never dropped over another 100 yards...

I'm shooting a Rem 700 BDL SS, with factory Rem express core-lokt 180grs.

I was very surprizes by this..never happened before..I would figure that 100 yards would be the high point of bullet rise...unless maybe they still rise 1/2'' or more at 150 before dropping back to 200??

Some expert help would be appreciated.

I have not calculated whether or not that is exactly as expected for a .30-06 and this bullet weight and these ranges, but this is perfectly expected. As you increase the poi at any given range, you also increase, naturally, the maximum deviation of the projectile above the line of sight, but also, you increase the distance at which the projectile is at the maximum deviation above the line of sight.

thats exactly what it should do.

there are a few free ballistics programs you can find and download on the internet.

if you look at the difference between 300 and 400 yards, you;ll see quite a drop there too- in the 308 with the loads i'm using, it's like 3 inches at 300 and 36 inches at 400 with a 250 yard zero- it's more like a rainbow than a straight line

Sounds about right. Think about it, in your example, if 2 1/2 minutes high at 100 equals dead on at 200, then cranking an extra 2 minutes elevation into the scope is going to put you 4 inches high at 200 and 4 1/2" high at 100.

ok ok..I never comprehended it at the time.. I understand what your saying...so, with the poi's that I have now at 100, 200, it would probably be just low or zeroed at 300 I'm assuming...I only have a 200 yard range where I live...so I guess to the ballistics tables I go..

Rem's ballistics for the 180 gr core-lokt in a 24" barrel, (which I have), state..if zeroed at 200...+2.1 at 100, +1.8 at 150, zero at 200, -3.5 at 250, -9 at 300, -26.3 at 400 and -54 at 500.. I'll have to work on this...

waht you want is in the back of the book,in the reference section- typically- mine works by ballistic co-efficent as well as velocity- i can tell you just off the top of my head that the 06 with 180s is only about 2 inches low at 300 provided you use a 250 yard sight in- the mpbr is 276 yards- the 308 is 267- y'see they're not that far off

Thank you very much...I wasn't thinking at the time, slipped my mind, that at 100 yards, the 1/4 moa euqals 8 clicks for 2 inches, since already at 2 1/2(the 4 1/2 I have now), which means 2 clicks at 200 equals an inch, so the 8, put it up 4 inches...:kickInTheNuts:Soo simple sometimes...:D but yup..thats where I want it to be....I'm extremely comfortable shooting at 200, and have shot at 3 and 4 before with much ease (considering conditions). I'm satisfied to hit a red beef bucket cover from 0-300 ever shot consistently, the 400 shot would just be the real hold-over shot..I'm assuming 20inches right now, will get some more practice within the next 2 weeks before hunting opens..

either way...I'm getting 1 inch groups at 200 yards..

actually it's closer to 23 inches with a 200 yard zero, 12.1 with a 300 yard zero- the back end of the "rainbow" is a LOT steeper than the front end- ie the velocity drops off more quickly

I "offically" measured my groups from the other day..I am actually getting half inch groups and up at 100 yards...and 2 three shot groups at 200 were 1 inch and under..smallest group at 200 was an amazing 5/8"..Went to my gunsmith and told him about it..all he said was.."Don't ever sell that gun! If you do, I want it!" Went on to say that when you find a rifle that can shoot under an inch at 200, you must keep it..:D Have never really been into the "tightest groups" rifles, but an '06 with factory 180gr core-lokts...kinda amazing in my opinion..rifle shoots wayyy better than I do. Cant wait to get to the range again..

Had the same experience as you with my Tikka T3. 4" high at 100, pushed out to 200, still 4" high. Put the gong at 300 and put my crosshairs right on it. 3 hits in a row. Personally i think this is a wicked way to sight in if you plan on going out to 400 yards.

Isn't this putting you about 5" high at 150ish? 0 around 280ish? 15"ish low at 400? Using mill dots? Or Kentucky hold?
