Soon to be getting my first 30-06:D Remington 700, already have a Remmy 700 in 223 and love her. What bullet weights do you guys recommend for moose/caribou hunting. And what weights do you recommend for target. I would like to try some 220 grainers for hunting and possibley 110 for target? How about powders any suggestions?
 
180's for moose/caribou. 168 grain match bullets for targets. 150's or 165's for deer. Although the 180's will do for deer as well. 110's are usually for .30 carbine. IMR4064 works well.
 
I like 180 Partitions as an all round load in my .30-06, but agree with todbartell.... 1 165 gr premium bullet will also work on just about everything.

You have to find out what is your bbl twist first and then based on that choose a right bullet size. Most of .30-06 nowdays come in 1-10" and that supports from 165-200gr weight.
For 130gr you shall need 1-13" twist which comes costum.

Why would you need a slower twist for the lighter bullets? Does something go wrong if you over-spin them? Now I know if you have too slow of a twist the bullets won't stablize , however I have never heard of needing a slower twist for lighter bullets.

If you plan to shoot long range, don't use 168's. They don't cut it at 1000 yards. There were designed to shoot 300m.
 
220's have alot less range than a 180 gr., and thus are less versatile in the field

if all your shooting is done within 200 yards, a 220 gr. bullet @ 2400 fps would do the trick quite well.

I use 165 gr Hornady SST With 58.5 gr IMR4831. Gives me 2850 FPS. 165 gr is big enough for any game and has better trajectory than the 180 gr.
 
I used 3006 for last 25 years and come to conclusion that using one bullet weight for everything works best for me. I had excellent results with 150 grains bullets on deer but now I think that 180 grain premium bullet like Barnes TSX is best for all game including moose,elk and big bears.
Yes I have two 7 STW and 243 Win. and 30-30 and all shot game but if I look at ballistic charts 180 gr. 30 cal seems to be the best there is:energy ,long range trajectory and so called terminal performance.
You say 300 Win Mag will do better job and 300 Wby Mag will exceed this ...with same bullet I agree...
I am loading 180 Barnes TSX for my 30-06 pump.

A good speer 180 spbt will shoot everything you want and more,and sticking with one load will make you a better shot. Every time you pick it up if its got the same load,its just automatically on. No pausing to recalc every time

1-10 twist Rifle boy. Although I've seen guys get decent accuracy with 150 grainers and that twist.

That is simply nonsense. I have owned rifle barrels with very fast twists and I witnessed no loss of accuracy with light bullets. In a .30 caliber rifle a 1:10 twist will stabilize a very wide range of bullet weights - one of the most accurate bullets I've shot in a 1:10 barrel was Sierra's 125 gr flat base spitzer.

The only effect fast twists (1:7) have on light bullets is the explosive impacts from varmint bullets like Sierra's Blitz or Hornady's SX. In my experience accuracy is not effected.
 
57.5gr H4350 behind either Nosler's 180gr Accubond or Ballistic tip.24" barrel delivers 2800FPS in my 700BDL.Prints 5 under MOA right out to and including 400yds,my just about everything load. RB
