30-06 talk

Guys, running a 30-06, what are you using? What's a good combo have zero experience with the cartridge
My Dad started using his 30-06 circa 1949 - 150 grain bullets for deer - 180 and 200 grain bullets for elk and moose. Once I got my 308 Win circa 1976 - we both started to change to 165 grain for everything. I have been loading 165 Speer HotCor in my 308 Win since then - is probably what I would start with for 30-06, if I hunted with one. Dad's last elk was taken with 165 grain factory loads - he never did get into hand loading. You will not find a bunch of difference between hand loaded 308 Win versus factory 30-06 for 165 grain bullet weight. Is not likely that you will get to 300 Win Mag performance, but hand loading likely can improve on store-bought 30-06 ammo - at least the run-of-the-mill stuff.

My only 30-06 is an M1 Garand. It loves 165gr SST's and 168gr Amax bullets. 47.5gr of 4064 running velocities in the low 2600fps range. Deer fall over dead from the SST's and the moderate velocity prevents bullet explosions or much meat damage.

Since you don't say what rifle or purpose it is hard to be more specific. If I was running a bolt gun I would be loading the 165gr bullets for deer and 180gr for larger things, still with 4064 for powder but much closer to max.

180gr. and up.

If i was looking to shoot lighter loads I'd probably drop to a small cartridge.

But, it sounds like 165gr is doable.
I like power when hunting but range isn't a factor for me.

Running a 165 gr Speer Hot-Cor ahead of 50 gr IMR 4064, out of a Sako 75.

It has taken a few moose cleanly, including this year's harvest.

30-06 is one of those cartridges it’s harder to get something not to work then what will work.

So much variety with this chambering.

My old model 70 is fed a steady diet of 180gr sp hornady interlocks in front of h4350 but I plan to experiment with 220s in the future just for fun.

I have loaded ammo in everything from 150gr Interbonds to 240gr Woodleigh Weldcores. Currently it’s sighted in for the 150gr Interbonds as I was planning on using it as my backup deer rifle. Other seasons it might be sighted in with 200gr Accubonds or 180gr Partitions or even the 240gr if I may use it for elk. Super versatile and easy to load for. 4064, 4350, 4831, all work well. I try to stick to temp insensitive powders and bonded or mono bullets for all my hunting rifles.

Lots of 30-06 loads.
150 gr FMJ over IMR 4895 or N135 in the garand.

125 gr Speer TNT over Dominion 4895, 150 gr Speer Hot Cors over N135, 167 gr Lapua Scenars over IMR4350 or N160, 185 gr Scenars over N160, 208 gr A-Max over N160 in the P17.

168 gr Hornady BTHP Match over IMR 4350 in the Winchester model 70.

This

For a long time it was "whatever was cheapest in the stores" and unless you need added precision for long range hunting, no reason not to.

Nothing was ever a "bad" choice.

These days, I kinda like lighter monos loaded very fast though.
