30-06 vs 7mm rem mag

7 v 06

Since this is about the once in 10 lifetimes you would have to defend a bear charge, I would opt for the 30-06, as the bear would have eaten the owner of the 7mm Rem mag:D :D ,,,,,,as he forgot his ammo and could not find any 7 mag rounds at the mom and pop gas satation:D :D , while the 30-06 owner had ammo available:D :D :D .

Really, for this question there is no right answer, it comes down to how well the owner can shoot

Elderly geezer peruses the options

I'm an elderly geezer and have used .30-06 for years. This caliber is a workhorse and ammo of reasonable variety is easily bought, almost anywhere. This is without argument the most all-purpose caliber we have.

The opening argument stated we're comparing 180 gr vs 175 all things equal per the two calibers.
The parameters were shootin' moose and feeling secure about Grizzly defense.

I don't own a 7mm RM so let's go with that. I know the .30-06 is capable but the nod has to go to 7mm on paper. Or is that on apples?

What about .300 Weatherby mag?

Uh...no it's not. The .375 H&H is the best.:D :p

Something bigger than a .30 bullet for a charging griz I would think. The huge gas tank is fine to go the distance, but if your talking up close and charging .375 .416 .458 .460...Would make me a bit more comfy.
Just a couple cents worth to toss about.:D Oh that 4600 that was foot lbs right..

Finally this silly thread has turned into a

charging grizzly bear thread

Reread the very first post and you will see that one of the uses was for grizzly-in defence of life.I am thinking that in defence of life would mean that you were being charged by a grizzly.

Has anybody ever chrono factory & handloads for these two??
I have & never could find a pennys worth of velocity diff between the 175 - 180s! Now I know all guns are diff but the 7mm I worked with struggled to get much over 2850, & the Tikka 06 I worked up I also had a tough time gettin over 2800?? Mind you my bud consistantly shoots 2900 with 180s outta his 06 with naught a sign of pressure

Personally in reply to the original question the answer in my mind  has to be the 06 because of extra mag capacity :)

In order to compare two cartridges, you should compare bullets of similar sectional density like the 160gr 7mm against the 180gr .308".

 If you want to choose optimal bullets for one cartridge over the other then pick the SD of .308cal 220gn @ .331 , the 7mm now has nothing in that range at all :)

As far as SD between the two in a 50' "shoot at charging bear" I don't think it makes one ounce of diff :D

reread the very first post, there is no mention of the 300 Ultra Mag

Id prefer a 300 Ultra over either the 30-06 or 7mm Rem though, but Id also prefer a 338-06 over a 300 RUM, and a 416 Rem over the 338-06, and a 458 lott over a 416 rem, etc etc, if a grizzly was coming to eat me

now to the original question, Id prefer a 7mm Rem Mag for hunting moose in country a grizz might inhabit as well. A 175 @ 2900 fps is nothing to sneeze at

So which do you think would penetrate more,a 220gr bullet of your choice out of the 30-06 or a 160gr tsx out of the 7mmremmag?

They'll be close. The SD for the 220gr .308 is 331, and the .284 is right around 300. But the .284 will be moving a lot faster, with more energy.
