30-.06 -- what should I buy?

No issues with the 2 Sako 85's I own. No issues expected with the next one I buy.

LOL. Maybe not yours, but it's undeniable that it's a problem to all but the most ardent fanboys. And maybe Sako.

Berreta's solution- use a different scope or mounts. Thats not a solution. An elcheapo SPS M700 will work with whatever scope/mount setup I want. Even a 30mm mounted in low rings or on a picatinny rail. What if you wanted to use a rail on your 85?

My 375 Kodiak with a Leupold VX-2 1-4x20mm. And my 300 WM Grey Wolf with a Leupold VX-2 Ultralight 3-9x33mm. No issues.

A Bavarian Carbine would be nice too. Available in -

22-250 / 243 / 260 / 308 / 7mm-08 / 25-06 / 270 / 30-06 / 6.5x55 / 7x64 / 8x57IS / 9.3x62

What no 40's? A 30-06 would do.

I'm looking to buy a 30-.06 this spring and looking for advice. So far I own a couple .22s and a 12ga. Otherwise, I am new to owning firearms but that's why I am here.

Ideally I want a reliable and accurate bolt action rifle for hunting. The calibre is appealing because I can use it for moose and caribou next fall. Weatherby looks appealing. I am currently borrowing a friend's Remington 700 to try out at the range (shooting federal 180gr) and it is nice but I don't have much of a reference point.

I would like this purchase to be my go to rifle for a long time. Let's say my budget is up to $2000 without optics but I would be happy spending less. Can anyone suggest a rifle where price and quality come together? What are your thought?
Here is my great working 30-06, (Sako 85 Grizzly) and extremely accurate. This is my 2nd model 85 and never had a problem with cartridge ejection. In Canada, they start off at $2,500, however other Sako models are of great quality as well, and less expensive.

Nice grain on your Grizzly.

On the 30-06 theme, I would load the 240gr Woodleigh for heavy game. Woodleigh recommends a 1:10 twist barrel. I get ok accuracy with this bullet at 100 meters with my 300 WM Grey Wolf so the 1:11 twist barrels used in the 30 caliber 85's seem to stabilize this bullet at close range at least.

I took my 85 grey wolf in 30-06 back because it was one of the worst shooting factory rifles Ive had the misfortune to meet. Over priced at 1600 never mind 2500. Although I brought it in on the accuracy warranty the dealer offered me a quick refund instead of me fighting with Stoeger. Easier that way, bought a Cooper instead. My shooting partner sent back a 3 inch on a good day .300 Grey wolf and eventually got a new one that didn't shoot either.

I would have taken it back as well. But of 6 Sako's and three Tikka's. I've never had one that would not shoot under 1/2 MOA with handloads and all with the exception of a .375 H&H were bought used.

My hunting partner had a greywolf in 7mag that was also terribly inaccurate. I found a tikka take off barrel, screwed it on, indexed and head spaced perfect. Shot sub moa afterwards. All manufacturers have their lemons I guess
