30-06. Which rifle is the best in this caliber, and why

You'll hear a lot of opinions on make and model and there will be some debate on the subject.

Look for a rifle that fits YOU. Go to your local gunstore and pick up and shoulder each rifle in turn.

Heavier the rifle, the less recoil you will feel but harder to pack over long distances. So Wood vs Synthetic and Hunting vs Target barrels will effect both.

Are you hunting or just target shooting? This helps a lot to know what you plan.

Also what is your cost limitations. This can also greatly effect your choice.

Either a Sako 85 stainless synthetic or finnlight.
Why;
Stainless everything, almost. Built like a tank, excellent build quality.
All new guns are expected to be accurate and function- these do not disappoint.

I recently was looking at a new gun in .30-06. I had always wanted a tikka, and the xbolt caught my interest as well. It came down to the tikka because of the lower price, and smoothness of the bolt, and that sweet trigger.

I'm not a recoil fan, so I threw a limbsaver recoil pad on first thing. I can shoot 180 grain bullets comfortably. the price of an extra mag is pricey though I will admit.

This tikka is very accurate, wish I had one a long time ago.

If you shop around for an axis on sale or buy a used one you can get a pretty nice Boyd's stock for it for just over $100 and you'll be in for around $400

Boy that is a loaded question, depends on what action type you like and what the purpose of the rifle is, and your budget. Best figure all that out first as only you can answer it.

There is a fella on the EE that has a Win. M-70, 75th anniversary for sale, as well they are still advertised on the Winchester web site. They disappeared after 2012 off the site then reappeared in 2013. So maybe there are some left and there trying to clear them out, they were a limited run. I have one, about the nicest 30-06 your going to find for the money.

Thank Mr goat. I am still waiting 4 en access but when I do I think that will b the model I will get. If it's still around.

If you really like the Remington 700, a Remington 700 CDL SF is a beautiful rifle and shots as well as it looks.
From a purely utilitarian point of view, it very difficult to argue against the Tikka T3!

Bengerman: sorry my mistake the fella on the EE is "looking" for a 75th anniversary M-70. The M-70 that is for sale is a "Jack Occonor" commemorative, also a nice rifle that was offered in 2012 that only came in 270.

I have always thought thst the "riflemans's rifle" was a pre 64 model 70 in .30-06. It would probably be still hard to beat that rifle/caliber combo. I still have a soft spot for one of the older Remington 700 BDL's too. For just putting meat on the table with a .30-06 though, it would be hard to beat a 7600. Ugly and all, but fast and accurate.

Well, for me, and my preferences in a 30-06 - I fall back on my 35 years of sport shooting. I love the 30-06 caliber for it's versatility. For me, I prefer a control feed (mauser) with a floorplate. The Rem 700 and others in the push feed system are good too, but I always seem to have that rifle at an odd angle at a critical moment, or am cycling the action to slow and seem to jam up. That and losing magazines. Right now I have a herd of Parker Hales, but am eyeballing that Winchester control feed action too.

The answer is of course "Garand".

That was the rifle in 30-06.

Seriously though, I have a Savage 111 with Accutrigger in 30-06 which is my go to hunting rifle and has been for many years.
As good and accurate as any more expensive rifle. Back when I bought it she was cheap too (under 400).

Kimber Montana 84L- light weight higher price, great rifle
Tikka T3 fluted stainless -light weight mid price great rifle
Vanguard S2 - mid weight, same action as on Nosler 48's, good value, great shooter
