30-06

30-06 has plenty of energy and velocity to be a 400-500yrd moose/elk gun and a 500-600yrd deer gun.
No problem at all. Proper shot placement. Even a direct shoulder shot you are going to be ok.

Over the years it’s seams people keep upping what they think is needed to harvest an animal.
Probably due to lost game or long tracking jobs.
Claiming an inadequate cartridge or bullet failure is an easy cp-out for piss poor marksmanship.

Fact: a 243win/100g partition will pass trough the boiler room of a broad side moose at 300yrds
IMO if you can’t keep a shot inside the vitals kill zone at said distance…..don’t shoot.

Elk tend to be tenacious of life. The 30-06 is capable of taking an Elk at 400 yards, but as has
been already stated, there are better chamberings for the task.

I have shot many Elk, but only about 4 that were out at that distance or a bit farther. In all of
the long distance shots, it was impossible to get closer without spooking the animals.
All those shots were taken with either my 308 Norma Magnum or my 8mm Remington Magnum.

Just to compare the trajectories, if you were to sight your 30-06 +3" at 100, you will be down
approximately 18" at 400 The 308 Norma so sighted will only be down about 8.5"

The magnum also arrives with substantially more "Thump". If you are using your 30-06
for the 400 yard Elk shot, you need to know your rifle and load intimately. You also must be able
to exercise patience to get a good presentation....no "iffy" shots should be contemplated.
A steady rest is mandatory. Dave.

That is alot of diff 18-8.5 in..what grain are you using in this comparison .
Also take into account the recoil diff and how many can handle it . It would take some experience for sure

Yes, aren't You ? The question is actually about the cartridge :)

Sorry bud, thanks for clarifying, we can't rule out the lowest common denominator around these parts.

The 30-06 cartridge, sure, it's capable. But only if you have the right impact velocity, the right bullet, the right wind/drop dope, and the right shot placement.

Now the same can be said for any option we talk about here. It's just that the 30-06 has a smaller window of capability than some of the louder options. Or put differently, it's harder to use for that particular application than some of the louder options. It wouldn't be my first choice. But a 400yd shot on an elk wouldn't be my preference, either.
