30-06

We have over the counter bull elk tags here; and they hang out and cross my land and surrounding area regularly. Used to have open cow seasons too, but not a lot of that lately. Then theres reds, shot those on 2 continents in numbers that we sometimes rounded off to the trailer load.;)

Has anyone here actually shot an elk? Maybe we could start there?

Great post . separate the key boarders wanna bees from the hunters...
I personally have shot 9 .. two of those with a Raven R10 cross bow

4- Browning x-bolt special hunter 325 WSM
2- Tikka M65- 7RM
1- Kimber select 280 ack imp

Whether you have shot 50 elk or have never seen one in your life doesn’t change the fact that a 30/06 will kill one at 400 yards.

Many, several with a 30/30 at least until I was told it was not a suitable caliber for them, lol. A few with a 30-06 and one with a Marlin 45/70, the end results were the same. 30-06 is perfectly fine caliber for elk, I personally would not push it past 400 yards if the intention is for a quick demise.

As my very good friend Chuck has alluded to here…this is yet another thread that would be awfully short if it were populated with those with actual experience shooting elk, shorter still with shooting elk with a 30-06, and extremely short with those that have shot an elk at 400 yards with 30-06, or anything else for that matter.
The OP, while perhaps struggling a bit, does have a point. He did ask about the cartridges capabilities only. Just sayin.

From what I've read there's only 1 guy here looking for an argument.

Maybe, maybe not. (one of my hobbies is being skeptical)

But at least now we know that all he's interested in are reports from hunters who have personally shot elk with a 30-06 at a range of about 400yds. I don't mean to put words in your mouth Spruster, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm interested in the same: If those hunters have done it dozens of times, or have a detailed account of the impact velocity, recovered bullet, and wound channel. Anecdotes can be interesting, but there are usually too many variables at play to be conclusive.

Right around 40 of the big cervids. I have shot them with everything from the 7x57, right up to and including
the 338 Win Mag. Ranges? 35 yards out to 425 yards. Several of these elk were taken with the venerable
30-06, but none over 280 yards. Longest shot with the 8mm Rem Mag.

AS I said before, elk tend to be tenacious, and shot placement is important. I would definitely not pass up
a 400 yard shot if I had a 30-06 in my hands. I just like the insurance that a bit more muscle engenders. Dave.

My longest shot on an elk with a .30-06 was over 300 yards, but not by a lot. I recall pacing it to 320 so lots of room for error, but it was right on target with my 300y hold-over.

180gr Partition at 2800fps, for a long time I shot that at everything from crows to moose (and once through a chronograph). It was a slightly quartering away shot and turned the off-side shoulder into bone fragments. Also used it on moose (all shorter range <200y shots) and probably a dozen or so whitetails out to 350-380 (but mostly 100-250).
