30 30 ammo !! ??? what to choose ?? first time rifle

Hi all ,

I just purchased my first 30 30 Model 94
winchester rifle...

What type of box ammo should i go for ?? Im looking for something that can handle moose and deer with shots no longer than 100 yards ..

so many what to choose ???

I think any factory 170gr ammo will be just fine. Just find the one that shoots best in your rifle.
 
I'd guess as mentioned, whichever shoots better is what you want.

I mean - at 30-30 velocities there's only so much you can do with a bullet. I've seen only one deer hit with a slivertip and it wasn't in a 30-30, seemed to do fine. Lots of people say good things about the power point too.

Buy a box of each, see which groups best - not that either will have to do awesome at 100 yards or anything but one may just perform that much better. The slivertip is slightly more areodyanmic, so if they both shoot the same, probably go with that one. You'll get about half an inch less drop at 200 :wink: Ha!

There are very few if any bad factory loads for the 30-30. If you were going for moose, at that's absolutely at the top end of reasonable 30-30 game, I'd give consideration to some of the premium amo out there.
If I had to chose a regular load for moose, I'd use the Winchester Silvertip. For a tiny bit more penetration, and less tip defrormation in the tube mag.

For Deer/black bear, any load you have listed will do just fine. I use the 170 grain loads myself, and I handload them.

150's will do just fine for moose.

What Bc Bigbore said. whatever works best in your gun, the differences between the two are marginal at best.
150 gr PP's and 150 gr silvertips are what shoots best in my 30-30, and I wouldnt give up the accuracy to pick up 20 grains in bullet weight, or lose the velocity.
Im still not convinced that you pick up anything by adding 20 grains of bullet, and losing 200 fps in velocity. The 150 gr bullet in the 30-30 carries more energy than the 170 too.
Bottom line, try the lot of em in your rifle. all of the above are under 20.00 per box, and you never know, your gun might be a tackdriver with one load, and cant hit the broad side of the barn with another

I use only 170 gr in my 30-30s. They shoot better than 150s in everything I've tryed. Haven't shot anything with them though :oops: but I like the idea of the 170 flat points for bigger game. Think penetration :wink:
 
I have found Federal ammo to be a little faster in .30-30 .35 Rem and other traditional deer rounds. I have chrono'd them to be 50 to 75 fps faster out of my model 94. .30-30 170 gr Hi Shok. A broad side moose at ranges 100 yards or less won't fair well when hit by the above load. The 170's seem to penetrate better than the 150's in my opinion.

I have used 30-30 150 gr. silvertips in my 94 and they work fine on deer, as for moose...you could use the 170 gr. but I would really consider buying another gun when ever you get the chance or the money. The 30-30 has shot many moose to date, but I think it's like going to fight Mike Tyson with one hand tied behind your back; your limiting your capacity and potential.

These Silvertips look pretty pointy - are they OK in the tube mag of a M94 or 336??? Or are they only for other rifles with clips or rotary mags??
 
The Silvertips are Flat Points for the 30-30. I use Federal Premium with Nosler Partitions in 170gr but I know that is not needed for deer. I would stick with 170gr and find a round that shoots well in your gun as most of the people here have stated.
