I have a Savage 99 that started life with my grandfather as a 303 Savage takedown. I shot my first 8 or 10 deer with it and then had it re barreled solid with a Douglas Supreme in 1973 and chambered for 30-30. It actually shoots along with my best bolt actions, but hasn't been hunted since the new barrel went on.
It may get some bush action next season, as it's about the right weight for my old carcass to pack around.:)

After many years of being a strictly Win '94 guy, I just added a real nice Marlin 336 pre-crossbolt safety model to the stable.... :cool:

1) Hunt & Shoot with a 1996 manufactured Marlin 336CS. Fitted with a Banner 1.5-4.5X32mm scope on Redfield single piece base and rings. With Winchester Power Point 150 grain rounds I have managed 3/4" groups @ 100yds and have a paper target showing a 3 shot 1" group @ 200yds. I am no marksman but this rifle is capable of good accuracy. I did have the trigger smoothed and lightened to 3lbs by a gunsmith as the factory trigger was very gritty & heavy. I've taken 4 White tailed Deer with this rifle, at woods ranges in Southern Ontarian Forest.

2) 1955 Winchester M94 fitted with a Williams Aperture Sight. I shoot Win 150gr. PP through this one too. I carried it this year during the Deer season as my son used the Marlin noted above. I shot a coyote at 30yds through the left eye socket that was foolish enough to run up to my ground stand...lucky placement, just unlucky for the 'Yote'. More of a fun gun but I may use it more now for deer hunting.

It is my belief that the 30-30 Winchester is entirely suitable for big game when used at reasonable ranges with good shot placement. Cheap to shoot with light recoil are real bonus's too. The Marlin was Chronyed @ 2250fps. Why go bigger?

Well this thread got me motivated to go to the safe and play with my Marlin 336. It is a newer model, and while the wood and bluing isn't as nice as the older models, and not even close to the pre 64 Win 94's, it is still one hell of a nice gun. I paid $400 +tax when it was on sale at Bass Pro, and it is probably one of my favourite rifles. I just ordered a couple hundred hard cast bullets to load up some plinkers so she will see the range again soon enough.
 
I have a number of winchester 30 30 rifles. They are a classic north american rifle used by Canadians and Americans for generations. Winch 94's were issued for the defense of the BC coast in WW2.

Yep, my Dad, a dairy farmer near Chilliwack at the time, was issued one of these when he joined the militia. Brand new for $10, which he got to keep after the war.

Hunted one season with it myself as youth.

They are specially marked, and have considerable collectors value, or so I'm told.

Former brother-in-law got this one, doubt if I'll ever see it again. :(

They are the PCMR (Pacific Coast Militia Rangers) In 1942 they along with some model 64 and Savage lever actions were issued to the militia rangers. There was about 3000 model 94,s in the serial range of 1,300,000.
At the end of the war they were offered out to members for $5.00 any not purchased were issued to government agencies such as fisheries and wildlife, the rest were destroyed in 1962.
I have one and it has the original green sling and sling band that looks like it was cut from a soup can, original equipment in 1942.
 
Have hunted with my '52 Winchester '94 carbine but it has now taken a back seat to my Savage 99 as I needed to mount a scope for my older eyes. I do like the feel of those pre '64 Winchesters - rock solid and the carbine version is a handy little rifle for dense bush.
 
I have a Marlin model 36 and a winchester model 94. I have shot deer with both of them in the past but don't hunt with them anymore. Been thinking of selling them lately.
 
I do own a 30-30 but, as it is a commemorative model, I don't hunt with it.

My favourite lever hunting rifle is a Winchester '94 AE in .307 WInchester, 100th anniversary model. I got my first couple of NWT caribou with it. I was going to buy a 30-30 until I read up on the .307 ballistics so I was sold on the .307

My other big bore levers are a Marlin '95 Guide Gun in 45-70, a Marlin '94 in .44 Magnum and, the fun gun, a Winchester Trapper in .44 Magnum.

Lever guns are like nice .22's; just can't resist picking one up every now and then!
 
Got a Marlin 336 in 30/30 for 150 bucks & almost brand new a few years ago & man what a nice little rig, did up some reloads out of the Lyman book for Hornady 150 gr . The book said 2426 fps I almost didn't believe my eyes when the crony confirmed the speed @ 2440 & even did some awsome groups & only 6 inches low @ 200 with a 100 yrd zero. Though the gun has still not taken game & I feel I've let the girl down as she could do lots with a good rest. Almost thinking of giving her a Leupold 2.5-8 thats collecting dust. I almost still can't believe that little case can push a 150 at over 2400, sure shows how good of a job they did way back when.
