It was originally marketed as the first "high velocity" round, using a "revolutionary" smokeless powder. I believe Mr. Browning worked on the Winchester 94 and then Winchester modified his designs slightly for smokeless powder, however I am uncertain if it was designed for war (government) or for sporting purposes. As for the question, no it won't kill a deer. Because you will obviously start second guessing all of your decisions when you eventually do see a deer, and by time you decide to do something, the deer will be long gone. Then you will come back to your computer and ask us all something stupid like "and there the deer was, but he left before I could shoot it. Should I get some Scent-Smasher clothes and bathe myself in Smell-Like-Pine-and-Poop deodorizing body wash, and only brush my teeth with baking soda and rabbit pellets so they can't detect me so quickly anymore? Should I? Please answer..."

After a few more range sessions with similarly dissappointing results, I ended up selling the M94 to a friend, but not until after I took him to the range and watched him shoot clover-leafs with my gun

Hey, normally when you want to discuss a subject, you pick up a book or other form of information based literature and read up on it a bit. If you had you would know that the 30-30 WCF has been the most popular commercial cartridge for Big Game hunting over the last 110 years. But hey, I am just going to go over and join a Alpha Romeo Fan site where the subject is about something I have no clue about and just start posting stuff. God help them if I receive any hard ribbing for my ignorance, or I'll start insulting their "virgina" what ever the heck that is.
And if you will notice, I did answer you question, and you need to understand that you are new here. That some of us are very crusty, and we likely have a few dozen animals, cartridges, and thousands of rounds on you. Bite back sure, but remember that we owe you nothing, and my sandy virgina is sacred, and I will hurt you for talking about it.

I might suggest that you ask the, perhaps hundreds of thousands of deer, moose elk and numerous other critters that have fallen to the cartridge. They will tell you hit works. It is a great cartridge and probably what more hunters should try before they use 300 win mag or 300 ultra mag on an animal that weighs less than 300 lbs!

I only bite back when I've been bitten..... if my questions seem simple minded well I guess thats my fault for not knowing everything like yourself.....some of these questions I ask turn out to be more informitive then just a simple yes or no..... Don't do it man. Deer are much tougher than they used to be. It's called evolution - all the millions of deer killed in the past by the 30/30 were removed from the gene pool, and the remainder are now immune to it. The same thing is now happening with the 30-06. You really need a 300 Magnum as a minimum and that might only be good for 50 years or so.
Of course if you make it a 30/30 AI, with special handloads you can get over 3000 fps with a 170 gr bullet. I know because guys have said they heard of guys who did it.

The 30-30 is quite capable on deer, and black bear, and will take animals as large as moose if you place your shots carefully.

A common symptom of the modern man is too rely on another persons experience and accomplishment. Just grab the gun and go kill something, then you will truly know.
All I am saying is grab some BOOKS (they have covers and pages, no keys or lights, I know ADD sucks..) and read the experience of our hunting forefathers ( I recommend Jack O'Connor, Elmer Keith, Ken Waters, probably some modern John Barness, Carmicheal, and the always fun Seyfried).
In reality they will tell you to use common sense (not my sense or his sense, that elusive COMMON sense) and go hunting.
But you seem to do well with the immature common insults. Those should keep us entertained for now....
Thumbs up if you do your part at reasonable distances. I don't see the point of the Leverevoltion ammo. If you want to use a spitzer in a tube magazined rifle, single load them. Guys have been doing that for years. The round nose flat points are just fine.
If you can still get PMC Starfire 30-30 ammo try that, my friend used to hunt with a 30-30 bolt action with starfire hollow points. He shot one buck in the neck at around 30 yards and you could put your fist in the exit hole. I only saw the end result but he said he has never seen an animal go down so fast.
