I hunt deer every year with my model 94 30/30 and it never fails me, but of course you have to be closer than 200 yrds. This year I might try moose and was wondering if a 30/30 has enough knock down power for a moose or should I use my .308 or something bigger?

If you can put it in the wheel house it should do the trick, bullet placement is everything. I would think inside of 150 it should have enough bang.

I've shot several in the past with a H&R 30/30, and have a friend who has used a 340 in 30/30 for about 150 years, taking a moose every year.
He insits that anything more is a waste of meat!

Yes, the .30-30 is adequate for moose. Personally, I'd go with the 170 grain loading. And keep the range practical. But if you do your part the .30-30 will work. A .308 will give you a little more reach ,however. ;) :p

I know an older guy who shot more moose with a 30-30 than with any of his newer rifles, a .308 model 99 and a 30-06 model 700BDL Remington.
He's an expert tracker and caller and usually shoots them in the neck at distances varying between 15' and 30' :)eek: !!) once he has them lured near a logging road for ease of quartering and carrying out.
When they do not come to the exact place he wants them to go, he let them go away; he says he's gone lazy ;) and considers that way of hunting his little challenge and "sporting handicap".
The last time I went hunting with him, he dispatched one that way with his Savage 99. We didn't lose an ounce of meat.

30-30 for moose

The 30-30 will do but as others have stated you should wait for the best shot and place it in the heart lung area at a resonable distance not over 150 yards. Be prepare to track if you don't get it right.

X2!

Keep the distance reasonable, use a well constructed bullet, the heavier the better and the .30-30 will reliably take a Moose. While big, they generally aren't that hard to kill. Put one where it counts and you'll take your moose. You don't want to flub the shot though!

The .303 British is probably the favorite Moose cartridge in Newfoundland, followed by the .308Win and .30-06, but I know of quite a few guys who regularly hunt with their Winchester 94 .30-30s and always get their animal!

In my opinion a 30-30 is a little small but it would do the job if your patient and wait for the perfect shot at no more than 100 yards, if you have a 308 use it.

X 2 I agree here:)

30-30 will do the job but what if your on your last day with nothing in the pot & the moose comes out & does NOT present "the perfect shot" at "the perfect distance"

I say better to have a little extra Umph if you got it!

LMAO< tell that to the moose I shot this year with one. :D

Like John Y said, been there, seen it, done it, got the T shirt.
And worked as well as a 338 WM would have.

.30-30 for da moose??

The .30-30 can do the job as others have said and many, many have done. It changes somewhat if you have limited time and are pressed to take a less-than-perfect opportunity because you have to. Sure, it can be done but if you live in the same world I do then you can always use a little help in terms of plain-old knock-down power. I never seem to see enough moose in the rifle season to pick and choose, waiting for a perfect shot. When a chance occurs I want every bit of extra slam I can get.

180 gr. partitions or similar in the .308 you mention will give you that.

It can work, as JYC proved, but it is far from ideal. If you have a 308 Win, use that.

I do and didnt. as well as having a 308, I also had a 30-06, and 300 WM that I could have used. (and a host of other calibers) but you cant convince me that a moose shot at under 75-100 yards is going to know the difference between a 30-30, and a 300WM. At the end of the day, they're both dead if you put it where its supposed to go.
If I were hunting a beavermeadow/ cutblock etc, I'd carry somethign capable of reaching out better than the 30-30. But slugging the brush, and humping through blowdowns and hardwoods, I'll take a light 30-30, why not?

Before the 08, 06 and magnumitis, there was the dirty thirty.
I bet its laid down more moose than you realize...

Its just not a Magnum capable of lazerlike trajectories, and society had equated BORING with INCAPABLE.
The dirty thirty may be boring, but it is more than capable.
BTW, even worse, I shot it with a 150 gr Power Point.
Im suprised it didnt bounce off:confused:

I didnt say it cant work, read it again Darrel

Its not ideal. A better brush gun would be a 375 Win, a 444, or 45/70

30-30 is best used for brush hunting for deer

Wow buddy, Im not hacking on you, Im just stating my opinion.
Someone didnt get laid lastnight. :D
Oh, BTW, got the 45-70, and a 356 (more thump than a 375 win) but like i said, I dont think it would have made a difference @ 25-100 yards.
I guess "Ideal" is in the eye of the beholder. and the 375 win vs 30-30?

Its like arguing between the effectiveness of a 308, vs a 30-06 when the maximum range is 100 yards.
Is they're really an arguement?

30-30 or what??

Funny how discussions like these can get a bit sidetracked. When asking for opinions it's pretty likely a wide variety of 'em will come in. There's really not a "right" answer and isn't the point to broaden our appreciation of the range of reasonable possibilities?

We havin' moose steaks fer supper or what??

Many people around here swear by the 30-30. My grandfather is one of them and if given the choise, that's all he'd use. I'm a credic of the 30-30, but mostly only to get the goat of 30-30 lovers:p

It will do the job just fine, but it's not the "best" choise. Most important thing is to not listen to the ammo box recomendation. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing "For Deer, Black Bear, and other light skined animals" on a box of .303 British:mad:

Id take a 375 Win or 38-55 over a 30-30 anyday for moose. Id much prefer the added frontal area and bullet weight over the 30 cal bullet at higher speed.

original question asked whether the 30-30 was up to task for moose, which it is, but IMO it is not ideal, and if a hunter has both a 30-30 and a 308 in the gun safe, I see no reason to reach for the 30-30.

there's my arguement.
