It can work, as JYC proved, but it is far from ideal. If you have a 308 Win, use that.
I do and didnt. as well as having a 308, I also had a 30-06, and 300 WM that I could have used. (and a host of other calibers) but you cant convince me that a moose shot at under 75-100 yards is going to know the difference between a 30-30, and a 300WM. At the end of the day, they're both dead if you put it where its supposed to go.
If I were hunting a beavermeadow/ cutblock etc, I'd carry somethign capable of reaching out better than the 30-30. But slugging the brush, and humping through blowdowns and hardwoods, I'll take a light 30-30, why not?
Before the 08, 06 and magnumitis, there was the dirty thirty.
I bet its laid down more moose than you realize...
Its just not a Magnum capable of lazerlike trajectories, and society had equated BORING with INCAPABLE.
The dirty thirty may be boring, but it is more than capable.
BTW, even worse, I shot it with a 150 gr Power Point.
Im suprised it didnt bounce off
