todbartell said:Id take a 375 Win or 38-55 over a 30-30 anyday for moose. Id much prefer the added frontal area and bullet weight over the 30 cal bullet at higher speed.
original question asked whether the 30-30 was up to task for moose, which it is, but IMO it is not ideal, and if a hunter has both a 30-30 and a 308 in the gun safe, I see no reason to reach for the 30-30.
there's my arguement.![]()
BIGREDD said:Well the .303 British IS a decent Moose cartridge... 30-30 makes a great camp tool for opening the beans... I'm serious.

Correct answer is why use a 30-30 when you have a 308![]()
mcoywg said:I hunt deer every year with my model 94 30/30 and it never fails me, but of course you have to be closer than 200 yrds. This year I might try moose and was wondering if a 30/30 has enough knock down power for a moose or should I use my .308 or something bigger?
senior said:Ahh but Daryl the question was as you can now see "I might try moose and was wondering if a 30/30 has enough knock down power for a moose or should I use my .308 or something bigger?
Surely you must agree, not knowing all & every condition here the 308 IS the correct answer to give!
Do you not agree!!
senior said:And regarding your last post "The 338 WM is ballistically superior, so all of the rest of my guns are Incapable per that line of thinking"
So to take that one better, do you recommend the 338 for prarie dog hunting tooor is because you haven't got anything bigger than the 338
to recommend??
todbartell said:nobody is saying the biggest gun you own is the one you should take hunting, but lets face it, a 30-30 on moose is marginal. Just because its killed them since the late 1800s doesnt mean it is the best tool to do the job. Back then people owned maybe a 22, a 30-30 or 32 Special, and a single shot 12 gauge. They didnt have the luxury of owning a 30-30 and a 308 or 30-06. Get by with what you have.

I still wouldnt pack a 30-30 if I had a 308 as well. Seems idiotic. Shooting a moose at 75 yards with a 30-30 is like shooting one at 400 yards with a 308
Right, not too many guys would promote it, but when it comes down to using it as a 400 yard moose gun, I dont think there are too many hunters that would turn down the shot because the 308 is incapable of taking a moose at that distance. I know you sure as hell wouldnt, neither would I.todbartell said:

30-30 will work most the time, BUT WHY USE IT
todbartell said:I shot my first deer with a 30-30 m94. I am not opposed to the cartridge, I even bought one last year, a NEF 30-30 (since sold). Just dont like the idea of it as a moose gun when you got something more powerful available.
and I personally dont think I would shoot a moose at 400 yards with a 308 eitherI got a little restraint and more respect for the game I hunt than to take long shots like that.
I think I am spending too much time in this chair today. I wish I could go shooting.

I'll bring some cans, and we can set em on the ram.BIGREDD said:Damn I forgot.... actually they don't recommend the 30-30 leverevolution ammo for moose. But is sure nice to be able to open a can of beans at 300 yards.![]()
