30/30 for moose?

Last two moose I shot were with 308 Win, with 150gr round nose bullets in moderate load. Switched to this as others had proved excessive. Both mooses died in their trackses!
Next time will likely move on down to my 6.5X57, perfectly adequate. If I owned a 30-30 in a decent rifle, I might use that, but I select the rifle to take hunting by the way it points and feels. I personally have not yet found a 30-30 that feels right for me (Badgers are funny looking, wide, low slung critters!).

Answer to original question might well default to the .308; if the questioner doe not have confidence to just go and use the 30-30, he is the best to judge, he may well do better with his .308.

This IS all relative, one answer or another, depends on the circumstances. It is pointless to argue unless we know for sure that we are all starting from the same set of initial assumptions.

Man, you can blow a moose away with an SKS no problem at 100 yards. If you miss, you can keep shooting. Then if it really gets far away, bust out your PTRD-41. It will die.

To be responsible use a .308.

To stir the pot even more, the 7.62X39 has similar ballistics to the 30-30. Next year I intend on using my SKS for moose!

If a I used 130 or 150 grain soft points (I would prefer 150) in a 7.62x39 and the rifle had a scope on it for accurate bullet placement, I wouldn't hestitate to shoot any moose at ranges up to 175 yards.
A moose can not tell the diference between a bullet from a SKS or a 30/06, or a 338 earsplittin' loudinboomer when the bullet goes through their heart and lungs.
And to moose"s reaction to a 30-30 bullet in the heart/lung area is to fall down and very seldom get up.

Re: 30-30 for moose
We might ask when a 30-30 for moose is appropriate? If I am doing the doggin; thing bushwacking through the bush I want a rifle with a comfortable one hand carry. To me this means a Win94 or a Marlin, which do not come in 308 caliber. The 30-30 will do fine at brush ranges. Of course if I'm sitting on a hill looking at hundreds of yards while someone else plays the dog, I would take a scoped bolt in something like 308 cal. Situation determines suitable action and caliber.
On the other hand I also own a Win 94 big bore in 307(a rimmed 308) which nicely solves this whole problem.

Nice! You have such an eliquint way with your words. You should try your hand at writing magazine articles! I'm sure you would do well at it.

Dave.

I know the 06 is a 100 years old, but how old is the 30-30? Was it made in 1930, hence the "second 30?"

I heard from a good source that the 30-30 has taken the most game, but I was wondering when it was made. I would probably get an answer on here faster than googling it.

The 30-30 was introduces shortly after the introduction of the 1894 Winchester, currently known as the '94. Souces place that introduction variably as late 1894, or 1895.

30-30, was a hold over from earlier designations where the first number indicated Caliber, the second, the powder load, and often a third indicated the bullet.
Hence 30-30 meant 30 cal, 30 grains (smokeless) powder. Although it holds slightly more.

the 45-70-405
was 45 cal, held 70 grains black powder, and had a 405 grain bullet. (modern 45-70 cases will rarely hold 70 grains of black powder)

guess this a wrong thread to say i want to take a moose with m/l this fall:redface:

Go for it!
Many people do not understand the killing power of the BP rifle. Nowdays everyone is in the high velocity camp.
Get close, and the BP will likely shoot clean through your moose making a big hole in the process. It lacks range and flat trajectory, it has tons momentum.
