Well I thought I'd fill you boys in on the planned hunt for late September. Everything is set. Only final details to be covered and SV7772 will be here in the morning to go over those... now if beer gets involved, that's all I can do...I'll cross that bridge when I come to it...:)


With so much talk and so little real life (or at least from what I can find) experience with Leverevolution rounds and big game, I will be using this round and my Marlin 336RC for this hunt.

Accuracy seems very good. 5 shots in an inch and a bit at 100 yrds and beer cans at 200 yrds...

I've sighted in at 3 high on 100 with the 3-9x and the irons dead on at 50

I am certainly hoping to show you some vid and pics of how this round performs on the animal.

We will be Elk hunting with bear licenses as well.
 
I'd be interested to see the performance. I've used factory 170silver tips and am very happy with the performance and wound channel. I've looked at the lever-evolution but can't justify the extra cost when the silver tips do exactly what I want them to. Keep us informed!
 
Been using the 150 gr silvertips for going on twenty years, work great up to 200 yards.


As for real life, may I quote the local MNR ... Nothing more scared than a Deer in an Apple Orchard.
 
I have always used the 170's without a single loss,...they do what they were intended to do, when I do my part...

There is just so much talk about the hornady's but so little actual real hunting stories, i thought I'd give them a try.

I have only used 30 30 - 150 grain silvertips, and never had a reason to complain. I love the Marlin, and use an 1894c in Cowboy Action Shooting
 
I am also curious to what the leverevolutions will do. I got a free box with my 336 but I haven't fired any of them yet. I'm still deciding if I'll take the 336 or my Savage .308 bolt out this year for whitetail. I just might do both. Depending on where I hunt.
 
Sealhunter, since I grew up in Saskatchewan elk land, would you send me a PM, of where you are going, or where you were?
 
Very interested in seeing your results as well. I also use factory Win 170gr Silvertips and I'm happy with the results I'm getting, but the LeverEvolution rounds have been nagging at me for a couple of years now.
 
I shot a 2 year od whitetail buck at 45 yards. First shot was just on the last rib centre. It knocked the deer right off of his feet. He got up ran about 30 yards and fell over. I put a finisher in his neck but it wasn't needed. Liver was completely destroyed. Both rounds completely penetrated the deer. I will be using them again this fall in my Marlin 336T.

I have a pre 64 Win 1894 in 30-30 it hardly ever comes out of the safe.

But if it did it would be loaded with 170gr JFP's...
 
I have shot 2 bucks with leverevolution in 35 rem. and one at 20 yds in the lungs through and through.....lungs = mush went about 75 yds and fell over. Second was at 50 yds through the neck dropped like a rock. I have no complaints :)
 
2 weeks away from the elk/bear hunt..

I sighted in yesterday with leverevolution and was hitting beer cans at 50 m holding at the bottom, and at 150 m, holding on the centre... thought I may have knocked it off, but it seems good :)

still very surprised at the noticable difference in recoil..

Watch out Elk and Blackie..:D

The leverevolution rounds are all well and good but the .30/30 is an excellent brush round and you can't make it something it's not.
Within 150 yards it's an excellent killing round, that's where it's reputation was made.
If you want something more you should upgun.
That being said, the .30/30 will suffice for 90 percent of deer shooting in my neck of the woods.

I realize were getting off topic a bit , but my marlin gg loves the 45/70 leverevolution rounds . I'm getting cloverleafs at 100 meters off a bench. They are what i'll be bringing this year

Moose, Elk, Deer, Bear... 30/30 and I'm good to go.

+1 on the Guide Gun... Got a few boxes for a 30-30 as well but haven't tried it out yet. Watch a guy about 7 or 8 years ago at Sherwood fish & game offhand a 30-30 with 170 grainers & open sights. He hit a 6" gong constantly @ 200m & could hit Shate out at 300m leaning against a roof pillar as well. I think it was the cowboy hat & belt buckle bigger than his head more than the rifle...........
I'd have called B.S. if I hadn't seen it myself or claimed that it was me!!!
