The Brits caught up.As for lever vs. bolt, When enemy riflemen are trying to punch holes in your hide, cycling a bolt keeps you a bit lower and on target than cranking a lever and the Enfield was the quickest to cycle. The No.1 should be reserved for cartridges developping much higher pressure than the .303, and the high-wall is just such a ###y design The 303 is a big step up in power over the 30/30. Enough so that the two can hardly be considered to be in the same class.
Both cases are as capable of handling high pressure as any others. The 219 Donaldson Wasp was based on 30/30 brass and loaded to very high pressures by all who used them. Section a 30/30 case and you will see the head of the case is every bit as heavy as most rimless designs. In fact, the web of some Winchester 30/30 brass I have is considerably thicker than that of my 308 Norma brass which is seldomed described as being "weak". Regards, Bill.
