You have to pick a rifle chambered in one, which do you choose?

this is a Canadian forum, of course the .303 is gonna win!! you guys should read this months American Rifleman.a very interesting article about a WW1 sniper rifle. it was Holland & Holland single barrel break open, chambered in .303 British and topped with a German scope( supplied by original customer, who was unable to pick it up, for obvious reasons) i t was given to the Irish Gaurds, and over the course of 2 days was used by a Drill Sargeant, with no special training, to kill 3 Germans and wound 4 others, at ranges up to and including 800 yards.and they say the .303 has no reach!

Frank de Hass said that there isn't too many cartridges better for hunting than the .303.

I actually think that the .303 would be a huge seller if offered in a different platform than the SMLE. It's a great cartridge, if Remy or RUger or Win chambered them it woudl have been a huge seller 30 years ago...Not so anymore, becasue we all know now that anyhtign less than a 180gr bullet at 3000fps will bounce off of a moose! :D

Yeah, I find myself agreeing with Bartell... A single shot action would be perfect for a rimmed ctg like the Brit...
I always thought that a classic double rifle in .303 would be cool, esp for this side of the pond

SC.......................

I didn't answer the poll, because It would depend on what I was doing with the rifles, and what rifle the cartridge was chambered in.

The 94 Winchester is IMO far better for walking long distances or for working thick brush, than a #4 Lee Enfield.
The #4 has better long range capability than the '94 though.
Chamber the 303 in a modern sporter, and it changes into a much more manageable beast.
Chamber the 30-30 in a modern bolt gun, handload it, and it can become a much longer range proposition.

Poll isn't specific enough

Poll is excellent...never question the poll....the poll is gold!
Suck it up JYC....the board is waiting for YOUR answer :p

As others have said there is no competition.
Since the bulk of 30-30s are lever guns with tube mags requiring flat-points and the bulk of 303s are SMLEs that allow a wide choice of ammo the 303 will always be more useful as a long range rifle.
And as flawed as the SMLE design may be it remains the fastest cycling bolt action rifle and stands up to a pounding in fitting with the utilitarian nature of the cartridge for which it's chambered.
Moreover, you can't argue with the superior powder capacity of the 303.
Whatever gets hit by a 303 stays hit.
I think the immortal words of Chuck Hawks in describing the 303 say it best:

"It looks sort of like a .30-30 case on steroids..."

I rest my case, a 303 case that is.

JYC,

What are your thoughts about a nice little Parker Hale sporter? I don't know the exact weight, but is just a touch heavier than my M70 in 30-06 on the bottom of the pic. Compact, not too heavy, decent shooter - best of both worlds??

No no. We won't flame you, just because you have a different opinion. (get a rope boys. )

HeHe I knew that I could through gas on a fire!

Seriously, I am a Mauser Man.... The Enfield's look with the 2 piece wooden stock just doesn't turn my crank! Sure if you "Sporterize the heck out of one (aka Let Bubba go Ape#### on one) they can kinda look nice. IMHO a Nice Mauser Milsurp will beat the pants off any Enfield!

Hey but everybody has different tastes. (Some people are crazy too! )

Let the record show I owned 2 Lee Enfields, one of which was my very first centrefire rife.... (Then I wised up and saved all my grass cutting money and bought a Remington 7600 in 30-06 which I still have to this day) Sold the Lee Enfield to some Hippy Mountain Man   He probably used it for a jack handle.

Boys - fetch something to turn this guy's crank. Vise grips maybe....

Allright - we'll let you live. This time.
