30-30 vs 44 mag Lever action rifle

30-30, it's a 200 yard gun, the 44 RM is a 100 yard gun. If anyone tried to argue, just remember the 30-30 burns 10 grains more powder (~50% more).

I would take a 44 magnum just for the cool factor. At distances I would be using a rifle like that to hunt, the ballistic comparison between the two cartridges is largely a moot point.

And 44 ammo comes in boxes of 50 instead of 20 rounds for the 30-30 :)

30-30 all the way if those are your two options for reasons already stated above. A 30-30 will do anything a 44 mag. can , but not vice versa . The only way I would choose a 44 mag. over a 30-30 would be if you already had a 44 mag. revolver , and wanted to have the same cal . in your rifle .

30/30 will do anything a 44 mag can, but not visa-versa.

It's quite the opposite actually. There be next to zero accounts of hunters taking on African or Asian dangerous game with the 30-30, but most all the big nasty critters in those regions have been routinely taken using the .44 magnum by handgun hunters using mainly cast boolits in weights ranging from 320-340 gr
at around 1500 fps.

The mass and momentum of a good, heavy .44 mag bullet be the key for killing power at ranges inside 80 yds on hefty critters. The high velocity/shock factor
types often miss this important point. Sure, the 30-30 has taken plenty of North American heavy game over the years but so has the 44 magnum.

Here be a primo boolit design that's ideal for shoulder shots on any of the heavy critters in our country. Best suited for rifling twists in 1 in 16" to 1 in 20" range.
A 330 gr bomb designed by JD Jones back in the early 70's that has done the job well world wide in handgun & rifle use on the nasty stuff.

Hunt in tight & place the shot right be me motto.

And the 44 can shoot a bullet twice as heavy....

The energy ultimately comes from the powder, explain how 22 grains of powder has more power than 32 grains of powder.

The 30-30 with 170gr bullets and the 44 RM with 180 grain bullets (in a rifle) have a very similar muzzle velocity, from there on out the 30-30 has an advantage that increases with every yard.

I'll take a 170 grainer at 2200fps over a 240 grainer at 1600fps any day.

Are you saying its impossible for a cartridge with a smaller powder charge to have more energy than one that holds 10 grains more powder? You realize all powders are different, right?

Example:
approx 30 gr in my 454 Casull with a 300 gr bullet = 2000 fps, and a 300 gr bullet out of my 45-70 pushed by 55 gr only gives 1900 fps..... Obviously different powders but the 44 mag and 30-30 are loaded with different powders too.

Although I haven't used the 44mag on game I've taken alot of whitetails with 50cal muzzleloaders and the performance is about equal to the 44mag from a rifle. That said I'd hunt anything in this country with a 44 mag and have confidence provided the proper bullet choice for the intended game. The 3030 lengthens the range and flattens the trajectory but not everyone hunts wide open spaces. I myself have been contemplating a 44mag single shot for bear hunting. Ontario it's mostly done over bait up close. The 44mag is also just fun

.44 magnum all day long.30-30 isn't worth my time,Ive had nothing but bad things happen while using them hunting, from misfires to wounded game with good shot placement,to jamming rifles and broken firing pins.30-30 and myself do not mix.But I still have my model 94 I got at k mart back in the day ,which works great as a decoration lol.

Biggest game you'd hunt with a 44 mag?

Your statement, not mine.
I clearly showed you that your statement was not valid. The only way to make that comparison is if you compare 2 identical cartridges, loaded with the same bullets, and the same type of powder. Then your statement is true. Otherwise there is so many variables that to say “32 gr has more power than 22 gr” is laughable.
