Am i the only one that still hunts whitetails and black bear with a 30-30 levergun ?

Nope , not a dealer , just a gunnut . Don't know about the colors . Had a hell of a time trying to leave positive feed back for another member this morning and my feedback didn't even show up until 10 minutes ago for reasons unknown . I only have 20 but it's 100% so pretty important to me . Now , jdman , do you hunt with a 30-30 ?
 
I own one, a Model 64 Deluxe that was my Great Grandfather's rifle. When he passed away in 1969 my Grandfather inherited it and when he passed in 2009 it came to me. It needs a rear sight elevator and a hood for the front sight, as soon as I get them I plan on killing a deer or two with it. I also have a Model 71 .348 Win he left me and I killed my first deer with it that fall, a 6 point buck.
 
are you guys crazy??!! you can't kill anything humanely with a .30-30!! People said so right on this very forum!! I read it!! I even read in one thread that a .308 won't kill a moose.

Seriously, though, you are quite well armed for anything you want if you maintian a reasonable expectation for the limits of the cartridge / rifle combo. Keep it under 200yds (150yds is better) and you will be fine.
 
What a .30-30, you can't kill a deer with a .30-30, to slow, not enough power, you need at least a 3,000 win supermag with a 38 power scope and you need to carry 4 spare "Clips" so you have lots of ammo for those quick follow up shots and deer get issued bullet proof vest when they still have spots and .........

More deer have been killed by .30-30 than all other cartridges combined!

My 340 C Savage bolt 30/30 is my favorite gun. I may have to break out the back up this year as I am still waiting to get my good one back from getting a new barrel.

I have done a fair share of nostalgia hunts with son and friends. My son and I shoot a pair of 1906 Winny rifles in 30-30. never been skunked and never had to track far. Gunna try a 25-35 caliber carbine this year just to see how it compares.
 
I keep coming back to my Marlin 30-30 for deer season. It has that magical quality of making things flop over on command... I realize there is a place for the Remchester wonder-boomers somewhere out there, but really, Whitetails aren't it for me. I also enjoy leaving the shooting range with my shoulder intact...

Beyond the factory ammo, I am discovering a whole new world of possibilities with reloading for the cartridge. This thing makes raggedy holes at 50 yards with Sierra 125 grain flat nose hollow points. I never would have guessed it would do that (nice coyote medicine or perfect for whitetail boiler room shots). I also picked up a 2nd Marlin (Glenfield) that I am developing for 170 grain cast loads exclusively. I hope to develop a load somewhere in the 1500-1800 fps. range.
Now, if the day ever comes that I plan to hunt Rhino in Africa, maybe I'll have to find something more appropriate. Mind you, those cast boolits look pretty nasty...
