30 cal bullet test, cow femurs and lots of newspaper Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part4 added

Thank you for all the kind words! I posted a quick update in the original thread regarding "old" and "new beefed up" Nosler ballistic tip construction. The 168gr I tested had the beefed up jacket and the 180gr I have yet to test is of "old" construction.

WhelanLad: I do not have any corelockts but I do have some factory winchester 180gr power point ammo I bought for bore sighting. I will test that bullet in round 2.

StevieK: The 55gr GMX was tested in a deer leg bone. Not the cow bone. It is still a very impressive performance though!

Sask_Hunter: I agree with you about the E-Tip. With the over inflated BC of the 150gr version and running it at 308 win speeds you might be in for a surprise if you shoot something at 300 yards.

I will still very much appreciate your effort to test the Winchester Factory rounds, In my mind i still think the Win Super X SP and the Corelokt will behave fairly similar. I know from experiences in the Dirt, i can hardly tell a difference.

From the 150s to the 180s, I feel as though the Velocity is right up there with 150s an they tend to open up alot, the 180 is the preffered Weight for 30cals an the Sambar around my part of the woods.

Following thread mate, cheers!

Whelan

The accubond and partition impress me in these tests. Seems the Barnes tsx is not perfect, but most likely awesome for dangerous or huge African game.

That is one thing about the Nosler Partition.
The performance is almost boringly dependable, lol.

That Hornady GMX is looking better all the time.
I have a load for my 300WSM Vanguard that flirts with 3200 fps,
and shoots well under MOA.[165 gr.]

The Accubond seems to be doing well, as does the TTSX [petal failures excepted!]

That beefed up Ballistic Tip should fare well.
I have shot one animal with the 180/8mm Ballistic Tip, also a beefed version.
It was a 250 lb Black Bear at 52 meters, and it broke the onside shoulder and exited the far side.

I have long been a fan of Swift Sciroccos...Not sure why they aren't more popular...

I think it is possibly because the first generation Sciroccos were just a bit fragile.
The jackets were a bit thin, and of course, the word spreads.

I wrote Swift about this issue after recovering two 180 Sciroccos from moose that were pretty well turned inside out,
even at 30-06 velocities, and one at 165 yards! [The retained weight was low, as well.]
I expressed my concern regarding possible results had I shot them from a 308 Norma Mag or 300 Win.

They have beefed them up considerably with the Scirocco II introduction, and now perform very well indeed.

I have no issues with using them, and in fact, have several diameter/weights in my stores, and loaded in various chamberings up to and including the 210/338.
Last year I shot a 3x3 Muley with a 6mm, using the 90 grain Scirocco II. It exited on a broadside shot that broke ribs, so must
have stayed together quite well. The deer dropped right there.

I'm amazed at how little difference there is from best to worst and none exploded on the bone!

I too am amazed. The 208 amax target bullet out penetrated several "real" hunting bullets and made an absolutly massive wound channel doing it. Pretty impressive indeed.

i'm also a scirocco fan.
so far in all the test results i've found they have faired better than
the accubond which is no slouch either.
i have tested myself 200 gr accubond out of my 300RUM.
and 150 gr scirocco out of my 7WSM. at 100 yard i tested 3 of each.
and all three scirocco's weight more than the heaviest accubond found.
and 2 of the 3 scirocco's had expanded diameter higher than the accubonds
even being 50 gr lighter and smaller diameter to begin with.
impact velocity was about the same for both.

Awesome testing Kman,im liking the nabs, and tsx in 300 and 375.I would be curious to see how hornady ibs perform. You dont own a .338 wm by any chance?Forgot nos part in 300wm also nice.

The 180gr bullets seem to have greater average penetration than the heavier ones. I guess there's a reason for that.
On the other hand, I paid $20 for a cow femur sliced in 1.5" pieces (to cook and eat the bone marrow (mmm)). I think you're getting a way better deal in Winnipeg. :D

Hey kman, excellent write up ands thanks for all your efforts. I can't imagine the time and expense you've put into your tests. You should know that you've gone international. I'm a member on a British hunting website and your tests are very popular with its members and are often quoted when disgussing bullet performance. Well done.

Interesting test, the only problem i have is your supposed to shoot for the heart-lung area not the leg. Using a rib cage would be more useful, i suppose in some cases you shoot for the shoulder so it would be a good comparison. Good write up and worth the time and expense you put in to it.

Thank you kindly. I had no idea!

Well done. Every single recovered barnes tsx that I've ever held in my lil hand has had all the petals break off. Close shots and far shots from antelope deer bear and moose they shed all petals. In the end the animal died so it did work but I don't think ill ever use them. I know many have flawless performance with them. I'm a fan of the partition myself. That hornady gmx looks impressive though. Thanks for sharing
