300 Fireball AR15 (Brass forming - post #150)

And regarding forming .300 Fireball from 5.56/.223, that's how I plan to feed this puppy... and if the case wall thickness makes for troubles at the neck (I don't think it will, but just in case) some fellas go the extra mile of neck turning or reaming the brass just to be safe. I probably won't, but it's possible if one wants to do it.

Yer gonna have to rethink this line of reasoning. I already tried cut down .223 brass and the necks were too thick. The rounds wouldn't go into the chamber. If you don't believe me I have 200 rounds of Whisper brass made from 223 you can have cause I am not gonna have any further use for them.

so when are the .300 Whisper barrels going to bee available??

Well Doc gets the first one and there is one more available for the time being. Rick won't let me chop down any of the .30 cal blanks we have lying around the shop to make 300 Fireball barrels. :(

If you REALLY want a Fireball barrel, call the shop and complain long and loud till he relents. :)

I've done the 5.56 to death and ready for something new!

I shot the 300 Fireball today and it was really cool. Interestingly a guy at the range commented about how quiet it was compared to a typical short barreled .223 AR. And that was with supersonics.

Felt recoil with the supersonic 150gr stuff was def greater than a 556 but then in comparison to typical military issue 62gr fodder, the 300 Fireball is throwing a bullet that weighs almost 2.5 times more at 60% of the velocity. The numbers don't really show just how much bigger a 150gr .30 cal bullet is than a 62 gr .224 cal bullet.

I don't think the 300 Fireball will ever compete against the 556 at long ranges but it has a ton more punch at medium to short ranges. And a short barreled AR is WAAAAY cooler than an SKS or CZ858. :)

As promised to Doc, I found a bunch of loads that cycle the rifle with both supersonics and subsonics. As usual, the stuff I didn't think would work, did and the stuff I thought would, didn't. It has just been one of those days. :(

On the bright side, I went for a motorcycle ride this afternoon and didn't fall off and hurt myself .... which was a nice change from the last time I rode a motorcycle.

Nice... but isn't that the way it always friggin' goes...

At least the bike ride was a good'er!

Oh, btw, for those who think ATRS is "just like anyone else" - how many times does a shop put together a rifle to your specs, and then ALSO do load development for the damn thing before delivery???

Full service and THEN some! I love you guys, seriously.

I like everything about it, and I rarely say that. What kind of optics are you going to put on top?

I'm thinking a Leupold Mark 4 MR/T 1.5-5x or 2.5-8x eventually, or one of the Mark 4 AR scopes in 1.5-4x or 3-9x. I think the Mark 4 AR wins out for affordability, and also being that this rig isn't exactly built for long range based on cartridge choice... although a hot supersonic load sort of resembles a 7.62x29 when it comes to ballistics. Subsonics just drop like a rock.

For now, it's gonna stay in irons/BUIS for a little while... "money" trumps "want" every time...

Yes they do. You will find that 200-250 yds is about the effective range of a subsonic.

and, from the same guys, now suppressed:

It's like throwing a football to your target... but then, if a guy wants to load up some supersonics, you've got a hard-hitting 30-cal from your AR without shooting 7.62x39 corrosive.

It's so versatile, I'm just stoked. It's got all the "neat-o" factor, with huge functionality depending on what you want to use it for. Now, if only we could legally hunt/varmint with AR15s...

What's a barrel blank - 30"? That's like two barrels for the price of one blank.:)

Rick obviously hasn't fired it yet if he isn't feeling the love....;)

Suputin and I got tired of waiting around for a botched-up order of 1:8 twist barrels to come in, so he suggested we proceed with some off-cuts of match-grade .30 blank that was 1:10.

Now I know that the other off-cut is spoken for by Suputin, but maybe if more become available... ? ;)

Begging probably won't hurt.

Spex

Nice vid.... Thanks...... I can believe the flash hiding ability...... But....I still wanna know if it helps at all with the muzzle flip?

You slimy BASTARD! Now there are TWO threads where you can taunt me while you fondle my soon-to-be new 'girlfriend!'

Oh, btw, for those wondering about the efficacy of the SPEX with .223/5.56, ATRS has a YouTube video up:

Pretty convincing stuff IMO.

I also plan on doing a rough-cut with an abrasive blade or endmill, then doing a final trim to length with an RCBS trimmer I've got drill-adapted. This should save a fair bit of "overtrim" time, I hope.

Damn I'm excited to get this puppy.

If you can live with a less than 10" barrel then you could get three barrels out of one blank. ;)

Actually I am still waiting for the 1:8. The free float rail I have is a bit longer so I need a 10" barrel. We have one bit of 1:10 blank left and I am gonna get that turned into a 300 Fireball barrel in the next day or two and then we will assemble another upper like Doc's.

Except way less cool... :p

I say put it up on the website and raffle it off! :)

how much would you sell it for ?

What? Barrel or complete upper?

I think we'd prefer to do a complete upper. Price depends on what forend you want and any sights etc. We have some Daniel Defence rails in stock but would likely have to do a bit of modification to get the JP gas block to fit under it.

Doc's upper is in the $1200 range. But a DD rail would add about $250 and a set of BUIS would add another $150 - $250 depending on what ones you wanted.
