300 H&H, semi custom rifle.

I am a couple months away from paying of my house, business assets just paid off, and have decided to blow a few months mortgage payments on my self. ($3300) a month.

I want to order, a 300H&H, bolt action, in quality wood and blued, fitted with express sights, 23-26", barrel band for sling, and quick detach mounts, for a moderate power scope, looking at another Leica, or swarvo, 2-10-42, all up weight rifle to be about 7.-8lbs.
Its a carry rifle, and will be packed for days after thar, and plains game.
Its also need to be something that can be passed with pride to my son in years to come.

then me and said rifle are taking a couple of trips. NZ, and Africa.

I have only found Dakota, cooper thus far that meet this specs, was quite keen on a Cz safari, but they are very heavy.
limiting rifle,to less than 10g, prefer half that, unless its a takedown,
want the option at a later date of adding a .375H&H or perhaps 400 H&H,
so questions,
who else makes a semi custom rifle that fits these specs, ?
anyone have a cooper, on a 375 sized case, and whats the weight, ?
Dakota take down, any one have one, and can a another barrel be bought to fit the same stock/action ?
Any one got, or used, a 400 H&H, thoughts, yep not common I know.
barrel length, I am thinking 23",

sitting in Vancouver airport now, heading back to NZ for a week or two, for a late roar hunt for red's and sika deer.

I'm not sure if Blaser makes a repeating rifle or not, but it may be an option?
 
laser makes some gorgeous repeating rifles, however they do not chamber anything in 300h&h. for what your looking at in a semi custom you could buy a donor action and have exactly what you want for a little bit more money. other than the two you've listed i don't know of anyone chambering the 300 h&h

Why not buy a .300 win mag current production Mod 70 and find an accomplished gunsmith and a stock maker to go all out with the rifle. Custom made stock, action reworked to fit the H&H and to smooth it out, new barrel, perhaps with machined quarter rib, band and sight, Blackburn bottom metal.

Stock work and metal work will be expensive, but under your 10k budget. You would have a dandy rifle at the end of it.
 
Just had a thought. I know it was recently discussed, but can't remember the consensus. A .300 win mag may have too much meat taken away from the rails due to its straight taper compared to the H&H. My post stands, but talk to the gunsmith first about best cartridge for a donor action.

Yes this can be done, I had Jason Spencer (Gunco) convert a 2000 era .338 Super-Grade a few years ago with a 24", cut from 26" Douglas pre-chambered barrel. Turned out very nicely however I think the weight might exceed the OP's criteria. Love those S-G's, but they're not lightweights.

I don't think you'll make weight with a wood stocked Cooper. My WC in 7 STW weighs 9.25 with a Leupold 4.5-14 and an empty mag. That's a 13 ounce scope plus whatever the Talleys weigh. Even my magnum actioned Kimbers with fancy lumber teeter at 8 pounds or a whisker above. Same or similar scopes, some have 4.5-14 LRs which weigh an extra 2.5 ounces. There's not much metal left to cut off one of those, but a plain wood stock should be good for an ounce or two. Winchesters with hollowed stocks and or slender barrels are in between, even a slender barrelled .375 H&H can be brought in at 8.25 with a straight grained hollow stock. Some of the fancier wooden handles like the occasional Super-grade will have you wondering if someone forgot to cut the tree down before carving it.
 
This is JMHO but if I had my choice, that kind of $ to spend and time to look around, I'd be looking for a nice old
vintage Mauser in that calibre. Nothing like a bit of history on a fine rifle. In the alternative I'd be talking to someone
like Martini & Hagn about my "problem" --- John
 
Stretch the budget and look at a Heym Express. The website doesn't shoe the 300 H&H but if you talk to them you might be able to persuade them to build one given that they do offer both the 300WM and 375 H&H so they have the barrels and the action that will work for it. If that fails then stretch the budget and have Ralf Martini build you one.

But keep this in mind...8lb all up is going to be a miserable goal weight to achieve. Unless you go with an exotic action like a Titanium Mauser from Satterlee or a custom by someone like Lex Webernick at Rifles Inc might get you there but when you add a walnut stock you're going to have a tough time making that goal. Your best bet would be to talk to a builder to see if they can hit your goal weight and at what cost.

If you're willing to spend three mortgage payments then you can wait another month and spend 4. No sense in cheaping out, especially with hunting season still a ways off.
 
Don't know if you've considered it but you are almost in double rifle territory price wise. A good double will last several life times and be nice to hand down. Balance is amazing on a well built double and they can carry good sights with a quarter rail for detach scope mounts. They take down easily for travel
 
Can't believe it hasn't sold. I want it but I have to restore this house I just bought. I have a special fund going but it's to go to Africa and if I keep buying guns that aren't on the list ill never make it

Thanks guys, there is collectively a lot on knowlage on here, I have already looked at the Fabarm 9.3 double posted, and typed up a message to the seller, then deleted it,
I have looked at Heym rifle, and am going to visit Cranbrook. this summer.
The intention is to build up a world travel, three rifle platform, So a med range magnum, a med bore, and a med bore double.
a mid weight bolt action 300 H&H,
a medium bore bolt action currently, (husky 9.3x62)
and a med bore double.
I already have a ruger #1 in 300H&H.
I aren't yet sure, if I can meet the weight goal's for such a long round, as the 300 H&H. I like the coopers, but think custom, perhaps dokata, is likely the only way, I will get were I want. With such a long case, needing a full sized magnum action, I may have to adjust plans,
I already have several, nice light weight, mountain suitable rifles, .260, 7x57, 264 win.

Just walked in the door, Currently in New Zealand, this mornings hunt was a wash out, pooring rain, slip came down over night and blocked axcess, to area, the papa, (limestone) rock hill country is very slippery, so flagged pig and goat hunt this morning, currently having coffee, and cleaning the finlight and deciding, if I am brave enough, to take the my little boat out over the cut, (bit of a swell) for tuna, or go for a fly fish on the river instead.

If your looking for the best built American built 98 Mauser, get a Granite mountain action, they size the magazine and bolt to feed the cartridge , really nice!
I got tired of finding what I wanted, so bought a Win Super Express in 375 H&H, and just going to rebarrel and chamber, remount sights and blue barrel!
