300 H&H vs. 300 WM

my personal opinion is the H&H...I assume the other one you're talking about is the Win Mag as opposed to the Weatherby mag...as everyone and their dog has a win mag...

I have a .300 WM, had a .300 Wby., but no experience with the H&H. I think there is hardly any difference worth mentioning between the two. The H&H has the "cool" factor, so I'd go with it for that reason.

Thanks boys, 300 H&H appeals to me because of the cool factor as well. I was referring to the Win Mag not Weatherby, but if T/C offered Weatherby chamberings I think my wife would'nt appreciate it too much..... $$$$$$$ and many barrels.

if you want a classic cartridge, the H&H is the ticket between the two

if you want maximum velocity on a popular case, pick the Win Mag

if you want something cool and different and fast and unpopular, look at a 300 Dakota. better rob a bank if you want to stock up on brass though. just a real cool cartridge

no flies on the 300 WSM, 308 Norma, 30-338, 300 Wby either

I'd go 300 WIn Mag;)

.300 H&H - what's not to like? In comparison to this cartridge's longevity, everything else is just a "fad"

I'd go with the 300 H&H...but I'm biased because my old Rem 721 has never had to shoot anything more than once, no doubt more luck than skill, whether its been caribou in thr Yukon or Moose or Mule Deer in B.C. or Saskatchewan, even the occasional coyote, and I've found the 300 H&H very easy to load, consistently accurate...an awesome cartridge !

I am swaying toward the 300 Win Mag, I have tons of brass for reloading and if in a pinch, every CO-OP in this area carries ammo. 300 H&H ammo seems to be hard to find around these parts. Thanks for the tips boys.

Another vote for the H&H. Cooler, classier,. and less common. Owning a 300wm is about as exciting as owning a 30-06. It may work fine, but everyone and their dog has one, and they're just not cool

I just bought a .300H&H off Supercub.

FYI; The .300H&H has the advantage when loading heavier bullets due to it's longer neck. It's main drawback is it's C.O.L. of 3.600", but in a single shot rifle that will not matter. The only reason the WM and WBY came along was to develop a shorter overall length cartridge and the necks/shoulders were shortened to permit more powder and velocity; so you get a shorter, faster round. Big deal, it's really not much of a velocity edge anyway. Also the factory velocity specs of the .300H&H can be boosted pretty safely to pretty much equal the .300WM.

IMHO the only reason to choose a .300WM (or WBY or RUM) over the .300H&H is availability of components.

I would probably recommend the .300WM for you, due to the components issue; it seems to be the most important factor to you. For anybody else, especially if you're looking at a fine bolt action, get the .300H&H.
