300 PRC and other 30 Cal Cartridges

Good luck seating the 230 A tip or the 245 grainers in a Rum.The ogive will be down in the neck with out 4 inch mag box and even with it you will be seated well into the powder column. That is why the PRC was developed.A little more thought went into the development of the PRC than Remington did with the Rum.They justed ripped off the idea from the Imperial magnum when they were approached to make brass for them.Plus there were not any long high bc bullets when it was developed.

The .300 Norma seems to be getting traction south of the border too. Its short 2.492" case length lets you seat 230s and 245s forward of the powder capacity with a COL of 3.60" yet it gives up little powder capacity due to its fat .338 Lapua case diameter of .588". Measuring the length of a 230 gr Burger I get 1.69", so only .22" of the shank ahead if the boat-tail is in the case neck when seated to 3.60" A 230 gr Berger makes about 2950 from a 26" barrel. Other big case .30s will make this velocity, but not with the long bullets seated so the rounds can be fed from a magazine.

Very well written Weatherby Fan.

Now I'm asking anyone.. I have a box of the 245's. Haven't loaded any yet.

Ballistics. 300PRC with a 215 Hybrid vs 245 EOL. Is there an advantage going with the 245? Real world who cares? Felt recoil maybe some difference?
Velocity loss would make it even? Either or? For hunting of course.

I have shot the 245 EOL out of my 300 PRC, 26 inch #4 1-9.5 twist Benchmark using ADG brass/86.5grs of R33/215M primers/for an avg of 2900fps and yes you felt the difference in those bullets with increased recoil over the 230 Atips or 225gr ELDM, but the rifle was braked so wasn't an issue for accuracy.

The only other Bergers Ive shot so far were the 210gr VLD-Hunting and they were a dream to shoot and crazy accurate, top right target.

Here's the new 300 PRC built by Gary Flach "G.E.Flach" weighs 8lbs 3.2oz scoped.

Defiance AnTi Action
26 inch fluted #4 contour 1-9 twist Benchmark Barrel with custom Flach brake added.
Oberndorf Bottom metal with 3.85" Wyatts Mag box and 300 PRC follower kit
Wildcat Standard weight CF Stock with palm swell and a slight comb added
Triggertech Trigger
Talleys holding a Zeiss V4 4-16x44 zero stop MOA scope

Gary blackened the flutes on the barrel and the bolt flutes and handle, Titanium Gunkote on the rest of the barrelled action and he also left the bottom metal black, turned out nothing short of awesome.
