.300 Savage is mucho expensive!

Went to C-Tire to price up some rounds for my new-to-me Model 81, and was shocked to see plain ol' blue box Federals for $39.99 a box! Guess I need to start reloading.

Yes you do.

And when you do give me a shout and I will be pleased to sell you brass! ;)

Doug

Same for 6,5 and lots of other ammo. Prices have been going up for a while ..not going to stop anytime soon. D

Yes for $40 you could have bought dies.........keep the brass BTW..might be fun finding it from an SA...Harold

I'm paying more than 9$ a box more this year than I did last year for my 7x57 Remington Core-lokt. Winchester 303 British 180gr is $26.99 at my local Canadian Tire which is nice.

Mine is charging 35.99 for the same .303 British.

Seems the two local stores (one a gun store, and the other Canadian Tire) are having a competition to see who can get away with charging more.

Yup time to start reloading, factory rolled ammo isn't going to get cheaper anytime soon! I started reloading years ago when I choked over the price of the Federal red box loaded with Noslers . I noticed I could get a box of 50 partitions for cheaper than a box of the loaded ammo. I invested in a Lee Loader kit for the princely sum of $30 shortly after and haven't looked back. Haven't spent much more on reloading either since then (other than components of course) just added a few odds and ends.

I think I want to go the Lee hand press route. It would allow me to use my house's warm upstairs all winter, instead of puttering away in the frigid basement.

Rounds like the .300 Savage tend to be even more pricey as production is limited and lower production generally means higher cost. Eventually the .300 Savage(though a good round) will be dropped from production altogether. If you like the rifle lay in a stock of brass.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RCTrAxBJ00 Hi Yall My first post so I thought I would make it a good one My Savage 300 is dated 1964 (from my dad). Well like you I dont want to drop 40$ every time I take this out of the gun Vault. This was my way around the issue . I also only use 110 grain rounds through it, due to its age.

A 1964 Savage has LOTS of life left and does not need to be babied. Unless there is a mechanical issue (which is unlikely), you can absolutely fire full-house loads in that rifle.

And welcome aboard!

Doug

just what do you expect is going to happen if you go more than 110 gr? 150 gr is tailor made for the .300 savage on deer. As far as spending 40 bucks every time you take it out goes, it is a hunting rifle and cartridge and there are much more cost effective options for a fun day at the range.

yes, thank goodness for the local CTA store. It's only about a 1/4 of the travel distance away for me from WWS and Cabelas. They had a number of boxes of Hornady Super Performance in 7mm-08 for $39. per box, where as the other two were $46-$47 per box. I took all CTA had.
