300 Savage vs .308

I know the .308 has an advantage over the old 300. But all in all what you guys think. Could the 300 savage be my do all caliber in the 99. Can she handle moose, or black bear. Thoughts?

I have both in Savage 99’s and I really don’t see much difference in performance on deer between the two. I wouldn’t feel under gunned going after moose with the 300 Savage or 308 Winchester with heavier bullets.

I had a close friend [deceased now] who hunted moose with a M99 Savage in 300 Savage
for 40 years. Never had any problem killing moose with it. It gives up very little to the 308W
Dave.

For the kind of hunting we do here in the Maritimes, it would be just fine. Wouldn't be my first choice for moose, but you could make it work.

With .300, you'll have lots and lots of fun, scouting, studying, glassing, hunting, and calling, whereas a.308 is more like lounging in a heated blind overlooking a corn feeder.

Nobody told my father-in-law that his .300 Savage 99 wasn't good for moose. They never went without meat.

Unfortunately the 99 was bought to replace an original Winchester 71, because he didn't like the weight.

My grandfather’s moose rifle and my first centerfire is a .30-30 Model 94, and he only ever nearly lost one once over the years... but still found it in the end. I know guys who’ve done worse with a .300 Mag for a track record.

I’d go hunt moose with a .300 Savage and feel like I had extra gas in the tank, moose aren’t at all hard to kill. For being introduced in 1920 the .300 Savage is remarkably modern in design.

At the time of its introduction a 150 gr 300 savage load equaled the standard 30-06 150 gr military load. Which was a big improvement for a short cartridge. The 30-06 load has been improved since then. My 300 when I first got wouldn’t shoot better than 8” at the hundred. The forearm needed to be shimmed which took groups down to 1 1/2 “. I put a little leather disc around the forearm screw between the stock and barrel.

My first deer , bear & moose were all with my 99 Sav. in .300 Sav. All were
killed cleanly. Bullet placement is far more important than a few f/sec difference.

300 Savage will work fine. The only real world advantage the 308 has apart from availability is a longer case neck which is good if you reload. If you did autopsies on dead moose i doubt if you could tell the difference with decent 180 grain loads in each of them.

A Model Seven in 300 Savage would be a very cool combo.

My 99 in .300 savage is one of my favourite rifles. It loves 150 interlocks over varget.

Ammo is no problem at all if you’re a handloader and have any 308 Winchester brass laying around.



Just resize in the case, trim to proper length, chamfer the case mouth, load, and go.

Virtually every round that I've loaded for my wife's 300 Savage has been reformed from 308 brass. Very easy to do as you point out.
