300 savage

Exactly. There's nothing wrong with the nostalgia factor, for those of us who can afford to "waste" our time, money, and energy on the less common rifles that shoot the less common cartridges. But surely no one at CGN would argue that's it's a waste?:D Maybe not their cup of tea, but to each his/her own.

The .300 Savage is a neat cartridge, but with the .308 having plentiful amounts of brass, a multitude of factory ammo options, and rifles abound, the only reason to go with a .300 Savage would be the nostalgia factor.

The .300 did what it was designed to do for more than 3 decades. Provide a powerful .30 caliber, short action cartridge, leading to the birth of the .308.

The .300 savage is an awesome round. Although the only thing I ever really shot off with any of the ones I owned was my mouth (fogducker will confirm that). Not quite, but pretty close. Lol. Mind you I have always been a lover of older cartridges. Just my opinion, but I think any of the rum's, stw's, wsm's are all a bullsh!t marketing circus! I'm not saying i'm right, or that anyone who uses these rifles is wrong. Because they are not! The other day I shot my grandfathers 38-55, 44-40, and 32-20. All of which he took deer with. I have hunted for 33 of my 37 years. I have hunted in many areas of Ontario, in a number of camps, and heard many many different tales, and hunting camp lore. In large part I know was drunken bullsh!t. LOL. But they all hold special spots in my upringing. The .300 savage was a common thread in those stories, and in my opinion is, and always will be one of the all time great hunting rounds! Just my 2 cents!

I am a bit of a "hound" for cartridges that may not be uber-popular any more, so when Remington brought out a M700 "Classic" in 300 Savage [2003], I latched on to one.
That was definitely no mistake.
Short neck aside, this is one of the most accurate production rifles I have ever owned,
Very catholic in it's tastes, it will shoot practically any 150 or 165 grain bullet sub-moa.
I load 45 grains of RL 15 behind the 150 Partition as a hunting load.
This chases the 308 Winchester hard, and I have had 3-shot groups as small as .040", with ½moa being about the average.
May not be a 308, but will do anything a 308 will do. [I've shot 2 deer and a moose with it so far]
Regards, Eagleye.

Hmmmmm, maybe this will correct my issues. My rifle is also the rem 700 classic. Thanks for the load info.

The first big game animal I ever shot was a bull moose. It fell to my borrowed Sav. 99 in .300 sav.

Then I hunted a lot of years with different guns but mostly a Win. M70 in .264 win. mag.

A few years back I bought a Sav. 99 in .300 sav. and have shot some game with it.

And I never felt I would have been served better with a .308.

The .300 Savage will do ANYTHING the .308 Winchester will do if you don't mind maybe having to search a little harder for ammo. Lots of hunters like to use something a little different and there is nothing wrong with that. We could all survive with a .30/06, a 12 gauge and a .22 rimfire but it would be pretty boring at the camp, nothing to argue about.

I shot my biggest muley buck with a .300 Savage 99. 170 yard shot (my longest shot to date). He was with a dozen does and dropped on the spot. I sold it to a buddy of mine as I had just inherited my Dads Win 88/.308.
I picked up 2 boxes of ammo (Federal 180gr) at a local CO-OP for $27.99/box so its still on the shelves.

I had a Savage M99 in 300 Savage. Great rifle and great round, anyone who complains about its short neck (on a hunting round) is splitting hairs, it doesn't matter, the cartridge is just a little slower than a 308 win.. All the deer I killed with it were just as dead as the ones I killed with any other deer caliber. Shot placement is what counts, my 243 win. with little 95 gr. bullets does just fine also. Just like the 250 savage it also kills them dead! Some hunters like shooting 300 Weatherby Mag. at deer- to each his own. Enjoy

The chambering is making a small come back. The Savage 50th anniversary model (model 10/110) was chambered in that round.

It was Savage's brain child and along with the 250-3000 (designed by Newton) was one of the best cartridges of the day.

It has been surpased in velocity by the 308 but the 308 has been surpased by the 30 TC, and the 300 short mags offered by Winchester, Remington, and Ruger.

My idea of the perfect hunting rifle is either a Savage model 20 or 99 in 300 Savage.

A classic round just like the 375 HH, 30-06, 45-70, 30-30, and 22 Hornet. All of these rounds have been surpased but are still relevant and effective hunting rounds.

77RSI in 250 Savage

I have a nice ruger in this chamber size and I was truly amazed at how light the recoil is the first time I took it to the range. I have a 257 bob and an AI as well as 25-06 for comparison. I was shooting a box of the Win 100gr factory loads in it.
Some kind soul with the same 250 gave me some load info with 110gr Accubonds which I have misplaced, be nice if he read this thread. FS
