300 Win MAG- My Latest Toy... What are Your Favourite Loads?

I have been shooting an assortment of custom made 300 wins for many years,
In my experience 200 grain bullets and H4831 shortcut powder works VERY well
Most have worked best with between 70.5 and 72.0 grains in winchester cases using 215M primers.

Sputnik; For years my pet load in the 300 Win Mag has been the 180 Partition, in WW cases, fired by the WLRM Primer and 74-75 grains of IMR 4831. Graphs just shy of 3100 in a 24" tube and shoots MOA in many rifles. Start 3 grains lower and work up, for safety. Regards, Eagleye.

My favorite load is a 220gr Partition, WW brass, F215M primers and 76.5gr H1000. This load is HOT so please start around 74.0gr. I have chrony'd it at 2858fps out of a 24" barrel and it shoots 1" groups at 100 yards. It is a very effective load, delivering 4000ft-lbs of muzzle energy, and it really puts game down fast. Everything from deer to moose. And yes, the semi-spitzer opens up fine even on deer.

Thanks guys.... Interesting, this time everybody has something a little different.... I like that, it forces me to try EVERYTHING!!!

I generally hunt tight bush but I have a few treestands overlooking some serious beaver ponds were 250-350 yard shots are possible. Oh Lord grant me the opportunity to draw a cross hair on a nice buck across the hinderland...... :D

QUESTION :!: I spoke to a buddy of mine the otherday and told him I bought a 300WM... He said he owned one and they were a ##### on brass, splitting necks like crazy....??? What do you think? I use WW, R-P, and Federal brass.... better stuff if I have it. Opinions?

Thanks guys.

He said he owned one and they were a ##### on brass, splitting necks like crazy....???

Never had a problem. I've used R-P and WW brass. A friend of mine swears by PMC in his Tikka, even though WW worked better in his Steyr. I've also heard that Norma is quite soft, although this is not from personal experience. If your shots are going to be at the ranges you mention you should give the 220 Partition a try. I have two hunting friends who use this load exclusively. The 180's are ok, but the advantage over a 30-06 is on paper only at the distances you mention. I'd go with a 200gr bullet at a minimum.

If you neck size after firing in your chamber so it headspaces on the shoulder rather than the belt, there is no reason the brass will not last as long as any other brass.

When I first started reloading for 300WM, all the manuals said about 3 to 5 loadings and throw the brass away. So I neck sized. I was watching for the bright ring above the web, using the bent paperclip trick looking for a groove forming inside the case, nothing, nadda. Finally, after 12 loadings, I got out the dremel and sectioned several cases. No evidence of thinning. Finally threw them out when the primer pockets got loose.

I have 30-06 cases that have gone 25-30 loadings before getting ditched.... I size, trim and check everytime!!! Everything runs through my digital calipers. I like to be within specification and safe.... I guess it is the (Civil) Engineer in me.

I think that I will start out with the 220 grain bullets to start... Traditionally I use 165 and 180's in the 30-06 just because they give me great trajectories out to 250-300 yards, usually that is seldom needed. Now that I have wayyyyyy more power and powder capacity, why not push a heavier bullet faster and out to those ranges with more energy than the 30-06? :D

Maybe someday if I get lucky, I will get to hunt some of those beautiful wide open spaces of BC, NWT and Alberta.... This gun would be my first choice there! I would love to bag a Mulie, Elk or Cariboo at the 300-400 yard range! I case you are wondering I am at the "family" stage in life where time, money are always in tight supply to get away for such trips....

I have a Polish friend who organizes such hunts for Europeans... He is always trying to get me to go along... Hey, Boris come Grizzly hunting with us, 1 week and $5000 US!!!! Errrrr Thanks Jozef (murmmering... You Bastard!!!) He is in his late 40's, kids are gone and he has a new wife 1/2 his age :p (she loves to hunt to boot too!!!!).... :p :p :p

Oh well, Maybe I will be able to take my boy up there someday, Or maybe my Girl? I hope to be able to teach them both to shoot if they want (I have seen some great young lady markspersons! - This would REALLY make her Daddy's girl  ).

I've never loaded or even shot a 300 Win Mag, but if I had one, I'd be loading 168 gr. Barnes Triple SHock X's, 180 gr. Nosler Accubonds, or 200 gr. Accubonds. Powder of choice would be H4831sc, RL22, or H1000. I think I could make something work with those combos...

If you will be using it for long range the 200 gr boat tails are good medicine. IMR4350,4831 and 7828 have been good for me there are lots of other options. WW cases , have never been a problem for me.
bigbull

Here is the load I use. 79.5gr of RL22, Winchester brass, Fed 215M primers, and Hornady 168 a-max or 168hpbt match bullets. This is a hot load that is borderline when the temp gets up. I am shooting this out of a 28 1/2" barrel and I am getting 3460fps out of it. It flat out rips. It is like I am shooting a different caliber of gun when take out my 300 win Eclipse M-1000 shooting factory winchester 180 sp. The impact crater left in the gong at 500 yard does not even compare.

I've yet to find a powder better then IMR 4831 for 190 to 200 gr bullets. The MOST accurate load I have to date is 71.0 gr IMR 4831 under a 190 gr SMK with a 215M primer and seated .005 off the lands. This load shows no pressure at all IN MY GUN.........yours may be different so back of the req'd 10%. It chrony's an average of 2790 fps out of a Savage 112 and shoot well under MOA.......actually more like 1/2. :D

i've been reloading for my 300 for 6 years now and i've found that that my two pet loads so far are
#1- r-p brass imr 4350 73.5grs fed 215magnum primer 165gr hornady sp
#2-r-p brass imr 4350 72grs fed 215magnum primer 180 barnes x (originals)
i generally don't shoot anything heavier though i did some 220 partitions up for my brother for his grizzly hunt, excellent expansion. the 180 barnes i found to be a little sticky in my dies but shoot really good, though i would not go any hotter, slight pressure signs(slight flattening of primer) once i test out a new batch of 165 gram slams i'll post results

I just started reloading for my 300WM, I found for, 180gr partition spitzer -74gr. H4831, 150gr. Hornady SST boattail (molycoated) - 79.5gr RL22, bullet holes are touching at 100 yards. 150gr. Barnes triple shock(molycoated) tried H4831 not one good pattern, still working on RL22, tried 77 to 79.5, now I am working my way up from there. Good Luck!!!!!

I like 165 Barnes X,79 grains reloader 22,fed 215 primer,RP cases.Crony's over 3300fps and shot well under a inch.was good in my rifle but start 10% lower

Congrats on the new addition!
I've got 2 different loads that work well out of my Rem Sendero.

This is my target load which gets me .5" at 200m:
178 gr Hornady A Max
75 gr Reloader 22
CCI 250 LRM primers
COL 3.525"
3070 FPS

This is my hunting load which fets me .75" at 200m:
180 gr Nosler Accubond
82 gr H 1000
CCI 250 LRM primers
COL 3.520"
3040 FPS

Neither of these loads are max in my rifle but start a few grains less and work up.

Happy Shooting.
