i have a mark 5 in .300 weatherby.but i had to vote for the winny.basicly for the ammo $.
i do reload and spent a few $'s on finding the load that will work with the weatheby.what i found out is..., the thing about seating as close as you can to the lands doesnt work ALL the time.might just be a weatherby thing....

It is a Weatherby thing. All the factory guns are long throated, in particular the older ones, which can have up to 3/4" of throat. - dan

The weatherby's just ###ier. Full length magnum, 'radiused' shoulder, not something that every other hick at the range has

+1, even better in a 30-378.......

And the velocities are possible, just not justifieable @ $5/brass case.
The instant I see the slightest pressure I stopped increasing.

To do it againt and buy the brass and rifle over, it'd be a 300 RUM in a sendero or 700 XCR.

Max loaded Winchest won't be far off from a Weatherby. And there is a reason the Winchester is so popular among long-range target shooters! That being said, nothing feels quite like a Weatherby in my hands, and I just can't bring myself to buy a Weatherby in a non-Weatherby Magnum chambering.

I prefer the .300Wby. Longer neck means heavier bullets can be seated without worry of affecting case capacity. And I love the double radius shoulder..###y looking!

As much as I love Weatherby cartridges and I have shot a 300 wby for a lot of years, it hardly makes a difference when your hunting, both kill #### dead, my brother and I have identical Mark V SS 300 wby 26" barrels, shooting factory Wby ammo 180gr TSX adv vel 3240fps, my rifle will never shoot above 3200fps and my brothers will shoot 3280fps with the same ammo out of the same box, I'm sure velocity wise its got a couple hundred FPS more than the 300 win mag. I see Hornady is loading the 200gr ELD-X in the 300 Wby now.

Not to derail your thread but I would suggest to have a look at the Hornady 300 PRC, its going to be everything you want in a Long Range 30 cal cartridge, factory Hornady offerings with heavy high BC bullets 212gr ELD-X and 225gr ELD-M, I'm having one built as soon as the barrel arrives.

I have 2x.. 300 win mag, and both Rem 700's
Rem 700 5R , in Cadex chassis , my Long range / Bench gun.
Rem 700 XCR II, in Magpul Hunter stock, Great light weight Hunting rifle.
Both rifles have Trigger Tech triggers.
Great caliber, with lots of Ammo /Brand options, and price $$$

Weatherby only because I really like the rifle(Sauer 202) its chambered in.

I have an early 60's German built No V Wby in 300 Wby. One of my favorite rifles. Also own a PH in 308 Norma Mag, a Sako in 300 H&H, and four various 300 Win Mags. And a 300 RUM and 300 SAUM. The Wby is quicker than my Win Mags, but not by a huge amount with handloads. Factory ammo the Wby is quicker. I doubt the game can tell the difference. If you want faster, 30-378 will do it, or 300 Pegasus, etc. That will buy you a little more useful range, but at the end of the day they're all just fast 30's. - dan

Ive had most of rhe usual 300 suspects, and still have the WSM, I think 6 Wins and 1 Weatherby. RUM Is gone , H&H is gone.

I strongly prefer the Win, to the point of rebarrelling a Mark V to the Win. The biggest reasons are I never got better speed out of the Weatherby given equal barrel lengths, and sometimes not even that. I like the Standard length cartridge in the laong mag box because I can reach the lands with practically any bullet, and have a bigger chance of using the bullets I want instaed of what the rifle likes. Near as I can tell the weatherby turns those extra 7-8 grains of powder into recoil. The RUM was only good for 150 over the Win, turning the rest into recoiland noise. That doesnt mean I dislike Weatherby rifles or all their cartridges because I rather fond of some of them.
