Soon I will be testing a new mold, a 150 grain bullet in the 45/70, it is a "collar button design that I will make from pure linotype mixed with 2% Tin. I will use the best lube out there and see how high I can safely go with velocity from both a 34" and 26" barrel, pressures will be kept to below 40K. Very little load data exists for this and I am interested in what folks think would work for loads and their expectations, ie: powder and charge weight. I have my own thoughts but would like to hear from others.
This bullet is meant for gallery type loads in the .45s and 1000 fps or less!!!........Tin Foil hat is on!!!!!

Ben, I'll guess the alloy will come out the barrel almost in the molten state, strung out.
I'm thinking that even Unique may be too slow.
I'll guess the pressure will, at least, blow a rut the length of the bullet, with much of the gas escaping and the bullet will take off toward Mary's room, as we used to say.

I bet the twist isn't right for that length of bullet, but of anyone on gunnutz to try it out, I can see Ben making something of it..

I don't think the twist is good for RB loads either, but when I load 3 RB in front of 15 gr of unique, I would not want to be in front of it :)

Been there done that about 5 years ago. There's a much better way:

- take any 45 cal mold with wide lube grooves;
- insert a gas check upside down in the lube groove of your choice; and
- pour as with any mold.

and voila, gas-checked light weight wadcutters (or semi-wadcutters if you use a gas check mold)!

The ones in the pic are (L to R) - 145gr, 195gr and a 485gr "Triple".

For real fun, load two or even three in your 45-70, using loads for a 500 gr bullet. You'd be surprised how accurate your "buckshot" can be.

As for a load for the 145 gr semi-wadcutter shown, start with a full case of H4198 (60.0+ grs) and work "down" to full cases of powders slightly faster than H4198, e.g. H4227, H110, 2400 and SR4759. I would go no faster than SR4759.

A 150 gr bullet you create will be about 0.375" long (a round ball weighs about the same). Loaded OAL will be about 2.250"

You'll get 3000+ fps at 40K psi or lower. As for leading, I got it above 2000 fps using 50/50 (Alox/Beeswax) lube, but it was not severe.

Forget about accuracy at that MV, or beyond 100 yds - these are much better suited to 1000 fps, and punch a nice round hole in paper. "Gallery" bullets for sure.

Andy: Good idea but won't i burn the sh&t out of my hands trying to insert a gas check into the very hot mold, or are you just pullin' my leg??...Ben

I can see the news flash! Someone in east central Saskatchewan gave themselves a lobotomy with an action from a 45/70 cal rifle. Play safe Ben.
