Hey.
bit of a story behind this but nothing outrageous, just like to hear some Pros an Cons between these two cals,
I have the WSM but may Trade off a rifle on another one as i like the rugers mechanics better.
Im not really worried how much better an all that, it really comes down to going for a rifle i like more..

how do they stack up

300 WSM carries heavy bullets out pretty far with lots of energy, and they fit in a short action meaning they may be lighter than some rifles. 7mm shoots flatter and faster but bullet weights top out at lower numbers, therefore less energy at distance. Both are great rounds, the 7mm isn't going anywhere anytime soon, the 300wsm is still new, but it probably will be around for awhile too.

If you knew nothing about your gun, you could use either one for the rest of your life, and you would never be able to tell which one you owned if all you had to judge from were the results on game that you shot.

You are agonizing over a choice that is almost irrelevant. All the differences in how they "stack up" are tiny "paper differences" that will not be detectable in any hunting situation. Pick the rifle you like and live with whatever the size of the hole in the barrel happens to be.

The 300WSM doesnt hold a candle to the 7RM in bullet selection, quality of bullets and felt recoil for your shooting and killing pleasure. If all you're doing is shooting hunting bullets then you probably wont notice the difference. But if high BC target bullets also interest you to keep you in practice in the off season, then the 300 comes up short. I dont know about you but I have no interest in slinging 208 grn. Amaxs in the off season when I could shoot 162's in a 7mm with the same BC.

Read the two posts above mine and you're ready to make your decision.

IMO, if you like the other rifle better, the difference between the two cartridges is a nearly irrelevant factor...

300 WSM
  • better internal ballistics (more efficient and accurate)
  • greater choice of 30 cal bullets
  • extremely accurate
  • heavy recoil
  • extremely powerful
  • easier to reload (unbelted case)

7 Rem Mag
  • superior external ballistics (bullets are more aerodynamic)
  • 7mm bullets are often better than 30 cal bullets
  • extremely accurate
  • acceptable recoil
  • powerfull

Either cartridge is a winner but 7 Rem Mag is a safer choice because of lower recoil.
If you reload you can work around this issue by using a lighter premium bullet.

If you reload, 300 WSM is a better cartridge but if you're simply a hunter looking for the best cartridge with acceptable recoil 7 Rem Mag is it.

The difference in recoil is about 2 ft-lbs in same rifles with comparable loads. If that's a concern, get the 7RM...

Barnes, Nosler and Hornady offer TWICE as many .308 bullets as they do 7mm...

:onCrack:

I've owned both and would have to say the 7mm is my preference. It was more accurate by far for me. The wsm was in a precision gun and the 7mm was in a sporter gun and the 7mm shot better. I shot them both to 500 yards at the range.

This is just my experience. As for reloading one was no more difficult than the other. I think I'll be testing a 7 08 against my 308 soon. I've got a feeling the
7 will come out on top again. I like 7mm rounds or maybe they just like me.

You load 208 Amaxs and I'll sport 162's we'll go to the gongs and see who goes home crying to his wife he needs Tylenol 3's and Rye....

I'll give you a hint, I don't have a wife......

'Course I ain't a crotchety old bastard either cou:

The difference in the these calibers is close enough that it comes down to the quality of rifle from which the round is fired from. If you are a competition shooter that notices a difference in accuracy based on how much time you spent cleaning your rifle then maybe you would notice the slight difference between these two cartridges.
I shoot a 300wsm and the compact action really is a pleasure to cycle through when taking down game. If you own a 7MMrm then save your money and keep shooting it, if your looking for a new rifle all together i'd be suggesting a lightweight rifle to help exploit the short action 300wsm. My one and only gun shop more readily has 300wsm brass than 7mmRM brass, and we are way the hell north of most in canada. I see the 300wsm as the modern equivalent for the trust 300wm.

Both great cartridges and both will easily kill anything in North America. Go with the rifle you like the best, that is more important. The deer, moose and bear wont' knwo the difference.

Hate when computors stuff up.

try again.

Sorry, some may have taken this the wrong way, or i may not have explained enough in my OP.

I purchased the rifle as there was a Run out sale on Browning A bolts in the country, the price was too good for a good hunting rifle.
I chose the 300wsm as available choices were slim pickings.

the wsm was to be a long range (read longer range) shooter than my favoured strictly stalking 35 Whelen, which is beaut out to 200.

i hadnt had much time behind a 300wsm at that stage, i just knew they were a fast flat hard hitter.
being such a light rig, ill be honest not ashamed, its quite lively while trying to place shots precisly.
(of course slappin a trigger in close doesnt worry anyone)

SO here i am now, with the question, wondering how the 7RM stacks up quite simply because I can get ahold of a Ruger syn/stnls 7RM for a nice price.

I am becomin more of a fan of Ruger, for various reasons.

Sorry about this post, it may seem jumbled or some might not make sense, no harm just ask.

cheers
WL

I say that it's basically come down to recoil:
  • 270 Win (17 ft-lb)
  • 30-06 or 7 Rem Mag (20 ft-lb)
  • 300 WSM or 300 Win Mag (26 ft-lb)
  • 338 Win Mag (33 ft-lb)

We can argue about the exact values of recoil but 270 Win is a "low recoil" big game hunting cartridge while 338 Win Mag is a "high recoil" one.

Both 30-06 and 7 Rem Mag are great cartridges because they sit right in the middle of the recoil spectrum where the average hunter still comfortable shooting.

So just handload that Ruger :D

I say get rid of the A-Bolt and pick up the Ruger, and you'll be ahead of the game with your LR shooting setup. Especially if the decrease in recoil helps you shoot better ;)

If I was in your position you'd see a 300 WSM Abolt getting thrown out of my window onto the cement as I ran and snapped the 7RM Wooger out of the dealers hands.

Abolt to Ruger is a definite improvement, and 300WSM to 7RM aint not a bad thing. :D
