300WSM V 7mm RM

300 WSM vs 7MM rem mag

WOW lot of opinions, someone early on in this thread summed it all up, there ain't a whits difference in the two, buy which ever turns your crank and go hunting. The quarry will never know if it was a 165 gn 30 cal through the shoulders or a 150-160 7mm. That's the reality of it. I have both and enjoy them both. My .300 WSM is in a custom short action Titanium Rem 700 that weighs less than 6 lbs loaded with scope and sling. Yes it lets you know when it goes off. I have several "7Mags" have hunted with this caliber since I was a kid, there is no discernable difference in the 2 out shooting game, period............. But by all means debate the paper differences till the cows come home, me I'm goin' huntin', there's some "dogs" out there that need killin'
PS for that I love my .243 or 6-284, positively devastating!!!

I agree fully Jordan,..... my 7mmRM handloads are way ahead of modern day factory fodder, but to bring those into a ballistic comparison, opens up endless debates over pressure's , barrel life, etc. The 7mmRM has been somewhat neutered in factory ammo for years, but in the end there is better barrel life and the cartridge will do the job fully with the throttle backed off a bit. This data and loads is what most will have to live with.

If I'm not mistaken, and please correct me if you have a link to old published factory data, but didn't the 7mmRemington Magnum factory loads in the 1960s and early 70s, drive 175gr @ 3070 fps in 24" bbl?

Seems thats what I always based the cartridge on 35 years ago, but because of throat erosion Remington reduced pressures to drive them at 2860. Can anyone prove those old ballistics true or did I dream those many moons ago?

Yessir, it used to drive 175's to 3000fps +/- in factory ammo.

I went an price checked ammo.

300wsm Win super x 180gr- $38
7mm Rem Mag 160gr rem core lokt- $42

Seems there isnt a great deal of onn game performance, There does seem to be a slight difference in recoil between a 180gr .30cal an a 150gr 7mm. Which is the weights id use.

Not too worried about trading an selling now, rifle is for sale for a 3 month advert, i will see how it goes in that time, which leaves me still a month or so before the NZ Tahr hunt.
The other plus on the recoil would be something to do with that slight more weight of the Barrel being 2inch -/+ longer an slightly smaller hole.
I have been using the 300wsm a fair bit of late, took a fallow Spiker for meat at only around 100ms, i have been glassing some arfteroons hoping to find a Sambar comeing down but to no avaiil, i can feel it coming.

cheers for everyones replies
