Who out there is using 300 weatherby mag,and how do you like......are ya using it for everything or ??????

I ordered one a few weeks back, was supposed to be a 300 Win mag....it's a Weatherby Vanguard...the store won't take it back or trade for something else, actually they have nothing left that interests me, yipped about restocking fees and all that other crap, so I may as well play with it....just curious as to what this calibre is like....got a pretty honkin' huge case on 'er  ....they threw in a box of ammo which I though was nice, then I noticed the price tag of $72 for 20........definately not something to take to the range every outing that's for sure

Just looking around for thoughts and opinions is all....may have to trade it on something a little smaller from the EE forum

Thanks

There is really nothing wrong with the 300wby cartridge but It is kind of a waste in a 24" barrel. You really need a 26" barrel to gain much on the 300winmag.If you reload, the cost to shoot this cartridge is really not a lot more than the 300winmag.If on the other hand you don't reload, trading it off might be a good idea due to the cost of factory loads.

I had a .300 Wby Mag and used a hefty charge of IMR 7828 and 200gr Partitions. It worked very well on a nice bull moose and a black bear. Recoil is stout, but still managable. You might want to try and stick to the heavier bullets (and less powder) because of the 24" barrel. For example a .300 WM takes 77.0gr (max) of IMR 7828 with a 180gr Nosler. The Wby takes the same charge (again max) with the 220gr Nosler.

PS. I think the shop would HAVE to give your money back (legally) with no restocking fees and a full refund of shipping would be in order too. They sent you something you didn't order. PM me if you want me to write something up for you.

The 300 Wby is a "little more" of everything in a 30 cal. It pushes the bullets a little faster then the 300 Win Mag, it shoots the same bullets a little flatter then the 300 Win Mag, it throws heavier bullets a little faster then a 300 Win Mag. Ammo is expensive, you should start reloading, and if you're one of these "I forgot my ammo " guys, you won't be finding any in the gas station down the road. Good caliber, used the world over, I like mine with 200 gr bullets. FWIW - dan

Your mistake or theirs

That does seem to be the real question. If it was your mistake, you are stuck with it.If it was their mistake they should quit whining and take it back.If you paid for it with a credit card and haven't paid the bill yet you could stop payment if it was the stores mistake.

Great cartridge for Canada. Weatherby name brand ammo is expensive however the Hornady, and Remington loads are pretty much in line with the rest.

I wouldn't cheap-out on the actual bullets for this or any similiar hot cartridge.

My factory Rem.700 has only a 24" barrel and I'm getting 3100fps+ with 180's using RL22.

The non-weatherby loads tend to be much milder than the weatherby loads. In fact the remington 180gr loads produced just over 3100fps in my mark V with a 26" barrel. My friends a-bolt in 300win mag was producing within 50fps of that with factory 300winmag loads.

I have one in a sako 75 ss. 3200fps with 180gr tsx. Room for more speed but I quit development there cause I didn't want to buy a different powder to try just for a few more fps.

Cheers

300 weatherby is a very good long range rifle it will work from deer to grizzlys with out any problem and ya it is VERY expensive to shoot thats were you need to re-load if you wont to use it....
my step-dad uses a .300 weatherby Mark V and i have tryed it as well it fit but i dont realy like the Monty Carlo stock it suprisenly dosnt kick that bad.
i would not hesitate to use it on any large game
talk to ya all later

Shot a good size bull last year at about 220yds. using 200gr.swift A frame psp.'s factory remingtons.Suprised the hell out of me,it never took a step!Like 1899 says the recoil isn't bad,a little more than my 700 ,300 win :D :D

I had one in a Model 70 with a 24" tube. I wouldn't say it's a waste in a 24" barrel. It would outrun my 24" 300 Win Mag by 100-150fps with about 10 more grains of the same powder, IMR4831 it was. :D ..recoil was a bit more, but the M70 was quite a bit lighter than my 300 Winny, so in same weight rifles, I doubt you would notice a whole lot of difference. I have dies for it if you want to try it out without investing a whole lot. I might have some brass kicking around too. I'll check.

maybe because they actually pressure test their ammo!! :D

I really believe that the remington loads are overly mild, but then again I have seen pressure signs using factory weatherby loads in factory weatherby rifles.

What store??

Ammo is expensive, so if you don't reload, you either better start, or take the gun back.

It's just a little Mom and Pop store......was a good deal irregardless....the gun was in a factory box marked 300 Winchester Magnum...I paid for it before...me and the sales guy took her out to have a look at it...got checking it over and noticed the barrel had "Use only 300 Weatherby Magnum"....I though "Oh Crap"....the guy threw in a box of Federal's 180 Nosler Partitions,$72...just about sh@t my drawers...thought it was pretty nice......i have a set of dies on the way...i'll try it out tomorrow sometime...have to get some extension rings, all my damn scopes are too short

Thanks for all the tips and infor on it so far fellas...much appreciated

Holy Crap! It is a good thing that you looked at the small print on the barrel before you tried to ram a .300 Win Mag in her!!!! What a nasty jam!

I think it is a crime not to reload for ANY gun. Once you outlay the inital expense for the higher price brass, the cost per shell won't be any more than a .300 Win Mag. I just bought a .300 Win Mag on the EE off of Sandyamac and love it. It is funny though when reloading - It sure gobbles up a lot of powder per case, 74 grains worth!!!!! A can sure does go FAST!

If you really wanted a .300 Win Mag, it really wouldn't make sense to trade your rifle, the hunting results would be very similar  (It would knock the #### out of anything that we have on this continent   8) )

Have fun!
