303:British hunting use

I use 150 grain Interlock bullets with BL-C(2) out of a Jungle Carbine. Knocks deer down flat and works fine for moose as well. My shots are all under 200m though.

the 303 will take care of any large size animal in this part of the world. reload and the cost will go down on the price of this rather expensive ammo.

Started hunting with a 303, 40 some years ago. I think in those days, just about everybody's first rifle was an old 303 British. I used to use the Imperial 180 ST in those days. They worked on Badgers, Coyote, Whietail, Moose, Bear. Pretty much anything that moved, you could use 303 on.....and we did.

I don't really use the old 303 anymore, but I still have one, and a couple boxes of Winchester 180 gr Power Point, just in case I ever want to.

I can't believe that I don't currently own a .303 as it's one of my favorite deer cartridges. My first 2 deer rifles were .303 Enfield's one of them a Parker Hale. I recall 180 grains being my go to but I also recall having a box of 215 or 220 grains that came with one of the rifles. Now off to the EE to look at .303s lol.

I have been using the .303 ( as well as others) for over 50 years, and still use the .303 as my main hunting rifle.
In a lee Enfield, I have had great success with 180 grain cup and core bullets as well as 215's, but seriously, for deer I think a 150 works as well for the most part.
for hand loading, 4895 works great as does Varget.
I use the 150 Barnes TSX in my current custom built rifle, but I run them faster and with more pressure than I would my Lee Enfields.

I've used a Lee Enfield , and a few Enfields , for hunting over the last 40+ years . Mostly with a 180 gr bullet of one flavour or another , although I did use CIL and Remington 215 gr bullets for Moose many years ago ( they worked really well by the way ) . I've been using Sierra 180 gr bullets loaded over a healthy charge of IMR 4350 for more years than I can remember . That load has dropped a lot of game for me , including my biggest Moose and Black Bear . It's a reliable game cartridge , usually chambered in a very reliable , and reasonably accurate , rifle . What's not to like ?

At age 12 or 13, and living in the B.C. central interior at the time, a 'Simpon-Sears' sporterized Lee Enfield was my first rifle and intro to big game hunting. It served me well and handled Mule Deer, Black Bear and Moose without issue. I've always had a 303 in the safe and most often in the form of a Jungle Carbine. I've had five Jungle Carbines I believe and the one I have now is MINT with all the trimmings, sling and bayonet with sheath etc. Recently added one more 303 to the pack in the form of a model 95 Winchester. Oh, Dads favorite go to for ammo on Moose back then was the 215gr loadings by C.I.L./Dominion.

48.0 grains of CFE-223 under a Hornady 150 SP has accounted for many deer out of three Ruger No.1-A .303 rifles.

I plan to put the recently acquired model 95 Winchester to use on Island Blacktail this season. However, recalling Dads 215gr preference, I picked up a couple of boxes of Woodleigh 215gr Weldcore RN SN bullets. And,:d at a local gunshow a while back:d, I lucked into an old box of 50 C.I.L. 215gr KKSP bullets. Might have to give a 303 the call on the next Moose hunt, and if so, :)Heres to Dad.

It has been calculated that more big game has fallen to the .303 British in Canada than all other calibers combined. Not ###y, not currently popular but very very reliable.

I haven’t used 303 for too much hunting, but it was my dads go to for everything, although he was primarily a moose hunter. He always used 180 grain whatever’s. Mostly imperial if my memory serves.

When I was younger I went to the Army & Navy and picked a #5 out of a barrel and a box of CIL 180 ST. Shot the biggest muley I’ve ever shot with it. Over the years many have come and gone, but still have my first. Head space can be a problem, but think of it as a 308 twin and you’ll have your power level.

shoot a few now an then with the 303 ruger 1, 150gr sp, 174 ppsn an 215ppsn have been the medicines, i use mine as a bush huntin gun closer range stuff- treat it as a 308

I take my 303 Lee Speed out every deer season

Probably the most prolific big game cartridge in this neck of the woods since the end of the world wars.

It would be nice if 215 grain jacketed bullets were easier to find. I've come across them but guys want over a buck each... I'd love to load some for hunting the thick brush by the creek on my property. The Jungle Carbine would be an extremely handy rifle for that!
