303 Savage.

1-12" twist is just fine for a 190 grain round nose bullet, even at 303 Savage velocities.

Plenty of 12" twist 308 Winchesters out there, and they stabilize the 200 Semi-Spitzer.

However, from some literature I have read, there apparently were a small number of very early
303 Savage rifles that sport a larger bore.groove diameter. [303/312]

I would slug the barrel of any early built 303 Savage, just to be sure I was using the matching
diameter projectile. Obviously, the odds of seeing the larger bore/groove is remote. Dave.

Thank you guys for all your help.
I did call trade ex and even left a message they never got back to me.
But a quick call to Rusty Wood set me up with brass and dies.
Ganderite the rifle will be mostly for plinking, don't intend on doing any hunting with it.
But to be honest with you fellas i'm having second thoughts on buying the rifle, the reason the Gentleman wants to sell the rifle it's because of the scarcity of ammo.
And he does not reload, so i'm thinking that he will be very happy with 50 new shells for Christmas.
I think he will be very happy to be able to feed his beloved Savage model 99.

Sounds like a great plan

What a great thing to do for this gentleman. Great karma right there and my hat is off to you.

The .303 Savage will do anything the 30-30 will do, and likely more if you want it to. Case capacity is slightly greater than the 30-30 and the 99 is a stronger action. I was quite surprised to get over 2500fps in my 26" barrel with leverevolution. This was with a load developed by Terry Weiland and published in either Rifle or Handloader magazine a little over a year ago. I carry and hunt with my .303. as does my wife.

Budget Shooters Supply also carries the .303 Savage brass. I have stocked up :)

Hi Guys,
To hijack the thread slightly, for those that are reloading the 303 Savage, what shell holder are you using? RCBS says #21 and Hornady says their #33. Both seem to be a bit tricky to come by. I recently bought a 1920 vintage 303 Savage take down and have brass, and dies now on order. The tricky thing has been the shellholder, in Canada. Will the shell holder for 30-30 work? Probably not as the base is slightly larger on the Savage and the rim diameters are different too. Ideas? Keep hunting?

Thanks,
Graham

My Lyman 48th edition lists a #7 Lyman shell holder for the 303 Savage.
Lyman shell holder for a 30/30 Winchester is the number #6

Thanks Mbogo3

I’ve been to the bottom of all three of those rabbit holes, mostly gleaning reloading data on powder choices, charges and bullet selection. No one really mentions anything about reloading dies and shellholders though.

I’ll just hunt down the appropriate size from whoever has one around, whether it be Lee or Lyman, RCBS or Hornady.

I just picked up a RCBS #21 yesterday at my local gun store $12 or so? Took a rd with me to make sure it fit I think they have a couple if you're stuck.Do you need dies?

MBogo3,

Ahaha, I found one on Amazon overpriced and sounds like slow to come. Then went to my local gun store at noon for some other things and asked thinking there’d be no chance. Smith pokes through his used stash of shell holders and there in the bottom, RCBS #21. Score! Price was $10 as opposed to $36 with shipping from Amazon. Cancelled the order and set now. Rather buy local anyway

. I have dies coming now too which should be here in a few days.

On a related note, anyone have leads on the 190 gr Barnes Original? Would like to duplicate the old factory load for moose or whitetail.

Got some Hornady 150 round nose for some playing around with to start.
