Has anyone converted a M305 to a SOCOM type configuration, including the shortened barrel?

I know I will need to get it reverified if the lenght goes below 18.5 in. , but was wondering if anyone had tried a conversion and what their experiences happened to be, what after market parts you used. etc

I was also curious if anyone had modified the magazine release to make it more like the AR's or come up with a easier to use/switch approach.

I doubt it's feasible to convert the magazine release. Rooster33 does make a more AR15 style bolt release, though, that allows you to drop the bolt by pushing on the catch instead of yanking on the handle.

Many people have made 18.5" bbl configurations. The problem with a 16" SOCOM model is that it would require moving the gas system, and adjusting the gas port diameter.

Also, many people will try to tell you that you cannot legally make a restricted firearm from an unrestricted one. It's not that simple, though. It's unclear one way or the other in the law.

You can't move the gas system. If you moved the gas system, then the action would not fit the stock.

Springfield doesn't move the gas system. It stays in the original location.

I am not sure if Springfield has done anything with the gas port size.

The best place to ask for info on the SOCOM spes or conversion is here:

Try to covert the mag catch would be a costly and time consuming project which IMHO, is not worth the effort.

SA use a custom gas lock flash hider configuration.

Why go to a Restricted rifle.

I have several 18.5's and have built even more, they are a great configuration.
You will need to change the front sight due to radius issues, and a Vortex hider kicks ass, I stock smith parts when I'm in town.

GG&FB in Maui!!!

Does anyone know if the SA "Cluster Rail System" is available and will fit the M14/M14s/M305?

Thanks

I would call Wolverine supplies and ask him if you can buy the 16" barrel and gas lock. If Springfield won't sell the parts seperate from a complete rifle then I guess that you're SOL

Thanks

There's no reason why it wouldn't fit, though you may need to replace the stock with USGI, as it has a narrower forend which this system apparently goes over top of.

My understanding, though, is that Sproingfield doesn't like selling parts separate from the rifle, so you may have trouble finding one. Knight's Armament Co. has a similar system though, which I would imagine is probably superior.

WOW, quick response. This what I got back from Vltor:
The Springfield Armory Handguard that you are referring to was developed
and manufactured by Vltor Weapon Systems. We gave the exclusive rights
for Springfield to be the sole seller of the CAS-14 Handguard

And My search continues. I'll be emailing SA and see if they'll sell it seperatley then.

As far as a SOCOM style rifle its easily done with standard parts, SA sight base and handguard, USGI stock, and R33 parts make a good overall shooter, and chances are your CFC reegistration is marked 470mm or greater, which means you can have a competent gunsmith reduce the barrel and adapt a suitable flashhider.

By going 16" youve got a restricted weapon (forrange use only). Not worth the hassle IMHO

latest project. 18.7" barrel ,AR FH, Sage Remington 870 collapsible on the Norc wood stock, Aimpoint & ARMS mount and King Arms( yes airsoft) M14 RAS.Still have to bed reciever and trigger group. At this point it weighs 11.5 lbs. This is this falls moose gun....Bob

P&D Enterprises made a few special edition 18.5'' custom & some were SuperMatch..You can ask them..

Ya, I put cash down on one but was qouted $1400 plus tax. Some how now they are $1600 plus tax. When I complained they said that I don't have to buy it as they have them sold 10 times over:mad: . I would like to know what has been done to warrent the $1200 increase. I was told its got the match spring guide, bedded, navy sight, AR flash hider and synthetic stock... Thats not $1200 in upgrades. Don't know what I should do now. I've already bought the ARMS#18 mount and 6 mags. I've always liked P&D but this is the second time I've been screwed. I'll have to see.

Some how the math doesn't add up.

Quoted $1400.00. Told new price is $1600.00.

That is a $200.00 difference, not $1200.00:confused:

In my M14/M1A experience those Mods are worth more then $200.00.As a guestimate, that is probably $400.00 to $600.00 worth of upgrades.

If you had put a down payment on one of those rifles at a quoted price, and they are now telling you that the rifle will be more money, demand the original price and/or contact the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint since you mention this is not the first time you have been "screwed" around.IMHO, they should honor the quoted price.

First off. I did the math as such... Rifle $400 so that leaves $1200 extra. I realize that to build this is not cheap but for that price I could get one built, if I had access to the parts, and it would be more than they are offering. It is just more conveniant to have one already done. So lets say $800 in parts and labor, that is still $1200. I had no problem paying $1400, and I realize they need to make some money. But $1600 with no guarantee of match accuracy to boot? It the principle. The problem I have is that on the deposit recipt there is no price stated so it is my word against theirs. This is not over yet because I have yet to really push the issue with them.... Plus the rifles don't even exist yet. I have a buddy of mine that has also claimed one of these rifles and was given the same crap. When the rifles do finally arrive we intend to raise the issue them. I by no means wish to imply that P&D is not an honerable company, this is just my recent experiance with them. I just hope that they see that keeping their customers happy will benefit them in the long run.

Ok, I get you now.;)

I am curious now, are they simply cutting down the Norinco barrel, or are they using a aftermarket 18.5" barrel? Is the trigger, bolt, & op rod the Norinco ones?

I came up with the following prices based on my experiences:

-Norinco M305 - $399.00
-Cut barrel to 18.5".Re thread & crown- $60.00 to $100.00
-NM op rod spring guide - $60.00
-Navy sight - $ 75.00 to $130.00
-AR15 FH- $40.00
-USGI stock set.Good to excellent condition - $125.00 ish.
-Bedding- $100.00 to 150.00 ish.

This is based on taking a stock Norinco and simply cutting down the barrel & adding a few aftermarket parts.

Low end total = $859.00 + Taxes

High End total = $ 1004.00 + taxes

If USGI or aftermarket parts are being used such as a barrel, bolt, trigger etc, then that starts to push the price waaaay up.

No P&D are using Dycor to do it for them I believe. m39a2 on the board works for Dycor. He may be able to give you some info. He quoted me $800 to work over the norc. But...he also said that they hate to cut the barrels so would likely not do it. As far as I know...the socoms that P&D have had are just cut down norc barrels.

personally, I am going to ship mine to Jeff at valleyguns and get him to cut down the barrel and work it over for me. he seemed to be a little more eager to do the socom mod than Dycor did.
