.308, 00 buck, or slug for grizzly?!

Because they're one of few companies selling a very heavy hard cast 12g slug for the folks that don't reload their own.

It's a good bone crushing slug for shots under 75 yards.

Brennekes have always been hard-cast.
theyre ~600 grains -- 100 grains less than the Dixie Slugs, but the Brennekes are loaded to 1380-1500fps as opposed to 1250.

some of Dixie Slugs' marketing seems a bit hokey... their comparisons compare them to ammo like the cheap Winchester Super-X slugs, but there are no comparisons of the Dixie Slugs vs some of the 3" Brenneke loads - which would be a more appropriate comparison. their Q&A makes it seem like Dixie Slugs invented the hard cast lead alloy concept and there are no other hard cast lead alloy slugs out there -- meanwhile Brennekes have been around since 1898.

Question: Why should I use Dixie Slugs?

Answer: Present factory slugs for smoothbore are made from swaged lead. Besides being too soft, most are undersize, severely lead the barrels and expand too much for penetrating heavy and/or dangerous game. On the other hand, Dixie Slugs are cast from hard alloy and heat treated, which gives deep penetration. These include: Terminator and Stryker. These are designed for rifled barrels. For the smoothbores, we have Tri-Ball II (3”) and Tri-Ball III (3 ½”). Dixie now has Stryker that matches the velocity from the original British black powder load.

Look at my avatar pic those are only some of the 45-70 bullets I load...

Not dissing the 45-70 in my opinion its one of best hunting rifles out there, probably has more north american large game kills under its belt than any other gun in history.

Not trying to get in a pissing match either, just saying a 12g hard cast slug will do the trick.

If I could have only one gun it would be the 12g shootie because it's so versatile bird shot, buck shot, slugs, bear bangers, flares, rubber bullets, breach loads, armor piercing flechets, explosive loads, tranq's etc.

Actually I first tried to buy them 5 - 7 years ago and have constantly searched for them ever since even contacting the manufacturer who told me that they cannot export them to Canada at that time.

So have you purchased them or ever seen them because I haven't and like I just said I have tried for years to get my hands on them...

I used a bow as well shot 8 mule deer over the years with one but always packed a firearm with me for backup...

I have been saying all along that I buy/shoot Brennekes where have you been... :D

and I wasn't talking to you I was talking too 723723...

Boy oh boy all guys sound like real pros's. I tryed to get the pic of bear bait Bob on this tread but i was unable to at this time.Bait was charge by a REALLY REALLY pissed off bear he hit the bear twice in the chest 340 weatherby 250 noslers missed the last two shots and then got into a hand to mouth fight with said bear the only thing that would of helped is his 44 mag at the last second .He would still have made contact but would not have missed work for 3yrs .If you think your life is endangered you have the right to protect your self by any means possible stick, knife, your .308;s.303.or what ever just make it count. I like 450 marlins 350 pills and nike runners .

BB is lucky to be alive. A chest shot is the wrong shot to stop any dangerous game. If you are going to play this game you'd better know what it is you are up to, and what the consequences of getting it wrong are. Killing the bear isn't enough, because a dying bear will kill you if he's close enough to touch you. If you can't make a CNS shot, you must break a big bone that supports the animal to stop its forward mobility. Shooting the bear in the ass and breaking it's hip trumps shooting it in the chest. This is not about a humane one shot kill that the sportsman strives for, this is about survival. It is about staying cool when everything else has gone south. Its about making good decisions, and using the firearm you have to your best advantage.

Actually if I had bought my 14" Dlask 12 gauge Rem 870 barrel before I bought my Marlin 1895GS I may never have purchased my Marlin 1895GS in 45-70....

I'm glad I didn't I would have missed out on a great rifle but I wouldn't have needed it.

If I was going to use a Shotgun for Bear defence it sure wouldn't be a pump gun. A SXS would be much more reliable in the hands of a rookie in case of a charging Bear.
I don't care how much experience you have had with a pump gun there's always a chance you could panic and short stroke the gun. That can't happen with a SXS.
Please don't say the pump gun has the option of more than 2 rounds. Chances are if you need a third round your probably already dead.

Win/64 that makes a lot of sense and one that I hadn't thought about for a while...

Light fast handling SXS maybe even a 45-70 SXS...

I just posted a thread that my father-in-law is looking for a wild life defense gun this would definitely be something to look at...

SxS rifles have been used in dangerous game for years. A sxs Shotgun with high quality slugs would be ideal for Bear defence.

There are three issues that need to be considered: cartridge effectivness, carry condition and ability to deploy.

Bear defense threads are most often about cartridge efficacy but it doesn't matter how good the round is if you can't get the rounds on target promptly while under stress.

Unless you are hunting you are probably not walking around with the gun in your hands so the condition of the gun while carried needs to be considered. I wouldn't carry any internal hammer shotgun with chamber(s) loaded and the safety on. While thumping around in the bush a tang safety on a sxs can come off to easily so that excludes most sxs except hammer guns with rebounding hammers.

Hammer guns aren't common and most come with extractors instead of ejectors. Having to claw out hulls for shots #3 and #4 if I didn't get the job done with the first two isn't an appealing thought. Also hammer guns of decent quality are not common. The only one generally available is the CZ and it's an extractor gun. Also, can you get two hammers cocked while under life threatening stress?

My preference for those times I want a gun in bear country is a 14" pump with Brenneke slugs carried with the chamber empty. But I shoot pumps often enough to be comfortable with them and can get the gun off my shoulder and into action quickly. I've seen guys short shuck a pump facing no more stress than a pair of clay targets. A semi-auto shotgun solves this problem but it too shouldn't be carried "cocked and locked." Can you charge the action quickly enough under pressure?

I'm don't stroll around bear country often enough to have a dedicated gun for the purpose and the where I am are black bears not gizzlies. Should that change I'd probably look for a Marlin or Browning BLR in .450, carry it with a round in the chamber on half-#### and practice with it often enough that I could get the rifle off my shoulder and on target under pressure.

It doesn't matter what whiz-bang gun you have. If you can't bring it into action then the only benefit it will have is as a bequest to friends or family once your blood is cleaned off.

Thats what I was thinking... :p

I do agree with a light rail on a defense gun though have one on my Marlin...

Yes that would be Ideal for the "Tactical crowd: With the rail they could mount all their "strap ons"
A sxs to me would be ideal because good ones are very quick to the shoulder and swing very nicely as long as the barrels are 26"s or longer.
When you start adding all that tactical stuff (flash lights Bayonets etc) you slow the gun down and throw the balance off. Not to mention the added weight.

I have a Wild West Guns light mount on my Marlin 1895GS mag tube the mount/rail is always there but the light is only on at night when I'm hiking out or in camp.

I have never been able to tell that there is any kind of weight difference with the light on or off the rifle and a light/laser combo would be awesome.
