.308/6.5CM/6.5x55/7x57/7-08 For moose

I've used .308 for decades now for caribou, deer, moose and bear. Never an issue and lots of bang-flops.
At standard ranges, shot placement is more important than simple caliber selection.

I only got into the .300WM recently because a change in the terrain type I hunted dictated much longer shots (beyond 500m).

Looking at lower recoil options for a friend. I've shot moose with .270W, 6.5 PRC, .308, .303. 7RM, 300WM, 300WSM, 338WM, 375 H&H, 375 Ruger and maybe a few others I don't recall.

What does your friend generally shoot so we can get a sense of his recoil tolerance? Like most here will say, most of the options you suggested would work however some would not be ideal. Depends on the range at which he would be shooting as well. 708 similar to 308 at shorter ranges with less recoil, the 308 gives you the option of shooting heavier bullets and a much wider assortment of factory ammo to choose from. 708 is very limited for ammo for those that don't hand load.

This list; .308/6.5CM/6.5x55/7x57/7-08, can appear in any order when rated as "best to worst" solely on the attributes of the cartridge... individual priorities would be very much akin to "splitting hairs."

The only factors that will ultimately matter will be bullet choice for a given impact velocity, shot placement and target posture... the rest is barely worth a dialogue.

on your list ,i choose .308 win.,i always hunt moose ,black bears ,and deer with 270 win. very satified .so all the list is good choice,

There is moose left in BC to worry about?
Run the right bullet and any one of them will work, the wrong bullet and each one will suck. They are a bit on the lower end of the spectrum power wise, but since most game is taken under 100y they will work fine.

308 is probably the easiest to find ammo, some what cheap, low recoil, lots and lots of bullets options, been taking moose for a long time! A friend of mine bee hunting for 30-40 years up here and 308 is what he uses! I use lots of 30-06, shot my bull Yukon moose this year with 9.3x62 and since then I got a 7x57r and a 8x57 to try out!

I am in the process of getting rid of my .270 and 30-06 and buying a .308. For me its a great do all calibre for pushing bush for elk and going out to distance for sheep and goats. Plus less recoil. The other bonus is readily available ammo which is huge these days.

I am thoroughly convinced that any of these will take moose without any issues.
Proper bullet selection becomes more important as diameter diminishes.

I have never hunted moose with the 6.5CM, but have shot a few with the 6.5x55.

I have taken 8 with the 7x57, and 1 with the 7-08...these would be my first
choice if recoil is a factor.
A decent bullet from 140 grains and up will anchor old swamp-donkey just fine.

I have shot most of my moose with either the 30-06 or the 308 Norma Magnum,
with a few scattered other chamberings factored in as well. But the recoil factor
is up a bit as well. Dave.

I recall “guntech” Dennis Sorensen telling me one time years ago on the phone about the 7mm-08 and how so many people under estimate it, I recall him talking bout one moose in particular if I remember correctly he said it was 325-330ish yards bang flop. I own 2 myself and absolutely the cal.

I have a 6.5x55, 7mm-08 and a 7x57 of those listed. I have only shot deer with them as I choose others for moose and elk. But if I had to choose one for moose, I would grab my Sweed for sure! But wouldnt feel under gunned by any of those choices!

180 grain 308 win is what I've used in my moose, 2 hits, double lung and liver, my father used a 30-30 150 grain, 2 shots also.
Here in Labrador a shot on a moose would be 100 to 200 meters

Any of the above. Moose are not particularly hard to kill. Magnums are not required at reasonable ranges. Shot placement is key same as any other game. If you are shooting at moose at 300 plus yards I would say move to a harder hitting round. My 2 cents.
