I actually loved the FNAR I shot in the states. I keep thinking I should buy one here. But my gun advisor buddies keep telling me not to.

imho Get a bolt, it will fit more of your needs.
The rifle pictured will pretty much out-shoot anything else mentioned.

Why do your gun advisors advise against one?
Just so you know, .308 is considered a full-caliber, hence any gun holding this size round will be considered a "battle" rifle if anything in the class.
Secondly, if you're looking for a good shot at 600 yards, for a good price, you can choose, either .308 or semi-auto as the combination is hard to get in Canada, and of course in NR. Alternatively, if you're looking to spend a bit more, here's something that might fit your need, but a bit (or rather a lot ) bigger caliber than .308 :

Believe it or not, the term assault rifle was coined by Adolf Hilter himself after he was presented with the MP43!
Assault rifle bascially means selective fire rifle using intermediate cartridge with high capacity magazine.
Of course, almost no civilians can have a selective fire rifle or high capacity magazines in Canada so that pretty much solves the problem.
As for the OP question:
The Swiss Arms SAPR would be a great choice if it ever makes it to Canada.

What the heck was I thinking . Did you try looking at XCR-M? It's a Non-Restricted .308 Semi Auto. But I doubt the accuracy to be as good as any Bolt-Action ones @ 600+ yards, considering windage and other factors affecting the .308 caliber, but nonetheless, much better choice than a 7.62x39

You might be sensing the angst about using the assault rifle label.Here in Canada Assault rifles were prohibited.Therefore suggesting that the fnar is one will perhaps prompt some kneejerk reaction to have it reclassified.It is not an assault rifle ,we dont have assault rifles.Thank you.
AR-15 I believe is what he meant as the style, but since ARs are built on M16/M4 style Upper and Lowers, they're mostly 5.56 / .223. FNAR or as I suggested , XCR-M would be the .308 option to fit his needs. When I suggested XCR-M, it was due to him mentioning 600+ yards and you can have a 20" barrel on the XCR-M as an option. Don't know if there's any restriction on what type of Twists they can allow and not allow , but oh well.
