308 barrel choices ...

Ok, what about a fluted type barrel? I'd like to shoot 168 grain match bullets and maybe some 170 grain FMJ's? Anymore advice on barrel makers/fitters? Thanks,

Agree with Obtunded regarding Mick McPhee. If I was having a 30 cal barrel done I wouldn't hesitate to have him do it. He did very good work for me any time I went there. Have had good work done by Dennis Sorenson too. Agree with the idea of supporting Canadian barrel makers. Nothing against the states but we need to keep our guys going. Don't see much sense to fluting. It looks nice and it might retard overheating a bit because of increased surface area, but I really don't know this to be true and you are losing barrel mass, which may be every bit as important. I had it done once to reduce the weight of a particular barrel and wouldn't do it again. I think I would just shorten the barrel a bit. Agree with what others are saying about twist too. I have shot a 308 with a 1 in 14 twist for years and it is best with 155 grain bullets. If I were to rebarrel for extended range, e.g. over 600 meters, I would want a faster twist and a heavier bullet. Like the idea of a 6.5 too. Just my $0.02. fred

Hey Otokiak! You changed your avatar..!?

Well, as you know I too am building or having built for me an AI clone. It is CURRENTLY being assembled by a specialized gunsmith (about damn time...). The barrel that I chose is a 26" Krieger #9 contour (heavy target) non-fluted with a 5R 1:12 twist with a threaded muzzle on which the Badger FTE brake will be mounted. The brake is removable and the gunsmith will make a threaded cap to protect the barrel threads when the brake will be off.
Having gathered info meanwhile, the only thing I would've done different is maybe get a 1:10 twist instead of 1:12.

The boys at Connaught use many different makers and they are all pretty good they use 30" barrels and drive 155gr bullets at 3000fps with lots of Varget, barrel life is very good 5000+maybe
I have made up a lot of guns over the years mostly Hart Barrels and others.
but for me today I would chamber yours in .284 win not the 6.5/284 the barrel life to short.Read this artical and you will see why

good luck you have lots of thinking to do !

I spoke w/ Rob McLennan las tweek, and he's doing some cut rifled barrels now. I'm not going to wade too far into the button vs. cut rifled debate, but now he's offering both...

Ok forget the fluted idea ... let's talk a heavy barrel that'll shoot 168 grain and up ... idea's? Maker's/Smith's?

p.s. zykopat, I know this avatar personally ... her snoobies are LOVELY ... ;)

1 2nd Mick McPhee. Get him to make the barrel for you and mount it to your action. He backs his work - You will not get a barrel you're not happy with.

Love my Rock Creek, chambered and installed by Alberta Tactical Rifle.

Kreiger would also be a top choice, as would Mick McPhee.

I have a M-24 contour 22" fluted Mike Rock barrel that is a tackdriver. Only if I could keep up with it...

Can you point me in the direction of a web site for the AICS stocks. Not having any luck googleing them.

Click on the link above to Wolverine Supplies. They are a site sponsor and the Canadian Distributor for Accuracy International. Find that section on their website and you'll see the chassi. They also have pricing on there.

+1, the prices have droped too. IMHO, it's not worth it to look south of the border anymore.

if you like to shoot 170 FMJ, because I shoot the 170FMJ Lapua lock base, very good result, I got it to shoot penny size at 100meter, and hitting 6inchs gong at 500meter, with factory Rem700 Heavy barrel in rem700PSS, there is nothing wrong with the factory heavy barrel in the rem700PSS , 3 of my rem700PSS shoot that good, at lease better than I ever be, from looking at the set up, you don't need any thing else, just ammo and shoot..., but if you going to get a rebarrel the 10twist barrel from Ted Gaillard is one of the best, he actually lap his barrel, and have it in a 24" config is by far the best choice in my opinion...

Gunboy, I've shot out to 300 yards with my current stock barrel on this rifle at tuktu(caribou) and hit them. However, I want to shoot heavier grain bullets at further distances. I'm still looking at all type of barrel makers, gunsmiths, etc. This site is great for help, info, pics, etc ... cheers,

For long range shooting I wouldn't put any less that a 30 inch barrel on. A 1:11 or 1:12 should shoot 175 SMK's out as far as you want to go. Stay away from the 168's for long range. I hear down in the southern states some F Class shooters are going with 1:8 barrels and shooting 220 gr SMK that will beat the 6.5 in BC even at the lower velocity.
