WEll I am trying to figure this out

I am hunting for coyote for the first time ever in WMU 59. All I require is a small game licence But was wondering if a .308 was illegal to use.

Here is what I read in the hunting regs
"A person hunting small game may not carry or use a
rif le of greater calibre than a .275-calibre rif le, except a
muzzle-loading gun, in the geograhic areas of of Brant,
Chatham-Kent, Durham, Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Halton,
Hamilton, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Niagara, Norfolk,
Northumberland, Oxford, Peel, Perth, Toronto, Waterloo,
Wellington or York."

so this means my .308 is good to go as I will be in mcnab/braeside correct?

any tips for first time coyote, my buddy says he just does it from a tree stand, but we will be near some farmland we are allowed to use..would you recommend the field instead

what about the phantom mini predator e-caller with the speaker, cant really afford a fox pro so would this suffice?

anyways cant wait :)

cheers

Mike

I don't hunt from up in the air because coyotes aren't stupid. They hear a rabbit distress 30 ft up, well they know rabbits don't fly! This time of year I like to howl first. Give the local alpha's a "screw you, I'm here for your #####es". Then I'll call with a fawn or rabbit distress to make them pissed "I'm" eating its critters. Remember, they'll probably come from downwind, and if they smell you, the gig is up. All these calls are available in mouth calls. Primo makes so affordable calls that come with some good videos too.

not for hides until I can afford a new rifle lol, maybe some fmj bullets would make things a little cleaner?

as for the tree stand, the kit im buying coems with the speaker with 30 ft of cord, so the speaker could call from the bottom of the tree, I may just bring my doghouse blind and put some winter cam on it im not sure

thanks for the tips though

I"m not against electronic calls, especially when it gets a little tricky, but I love calling with mouth calls. Last Saturday I let out this brutal howl. I mean it sounded like a coyote was being "entered" by a moose. Three of the bastards came running over to check it out...2 did not leave!

:) I also live and hunt coyotes in unit 59 you are good to go with your 308 in this unit. Some of guys I hunt with use their deer rifles etc. work good for open long shooting and often in the wind that we see in March.Use good bullets and you will be happy with not alot of fur damage. We hunt alot of farm land do alot of calling aways on ground. My coyote guns are .243 win and a 6 mm rem. shooting 75 G. VMAX. The biggest thing to watch is the wind.

I also use 243 and a 22 -250 both work well. little pelt damage. you should look into some mouth calls they are resonibly cheap and there is nothing like calling in a yote on your own.

haha awesome its mike here younger red headed military guy..dont know if you remember or not...seen you at the eganville range a while back doing some long range shooting..but thanks for the tips

This past deer season, I successfully called in 2 coyotes from the treestand; one to within 10 yards. I agree that they're not stupid, but they are curious and it is possible to hunt them successfully from a treestand.

I'm in Pembroke and if either of you guys don't mind me tagging along for a coyote hunt I would love the opportunity. I have my hunting course but have never been out hunt, also have a .223 stevens 200.

If .308 is what you got... then .308 is what you shoot! It will work fine, particularly with the right load... but obviously it is not the ideal coyote gun. We shoot .243's now for the most part... but also use our 17 HMR's when we are going to be in brush/forest country where the shots will not be too long... with the Hummer's we only use the 20 grain XTP rounds... the 17 grain V-Max are HIGHLY frangible and have not been as effective as we would like for use on larger small game (coon, foxes and coyotes). Here is a .308 load to consider;

Years ago I used a 270 Win. because that's all I had that could reach out accurately 200-300yards. Pelt damage was evident but I still have a few of them on my wall in front of me.

Do you reload? I've used .308 100 gr Speer Plinkers out to 200 yds. Even at 3000 fps muzzle velocity they don't blow huge holes.

130 gr Hornady Spire points work well too.
