.308 for grizzly what loads

Ive comfortably packed a 30-06 with 200gr TSX while grizz hunting, 308 isn't that far off. Give him lots of range practice from field positions before the hunts. Good luck! I'd use 165gr TSX in 308

As pretty well everyone else has said a .308 will be fine with good placement and bullets. If this were my son I would be ready to back him up the second he shoots with something big and would advise him to pour the lead on after the initial shot and you should do the same.

If you don't have a tag, it's illegal to shoot at an animal in BC. No "party" hunting for grizzly here.

Although "back up" shots arent' uncommon, form what I hear.:p

things can happen fast when an excited 12 year old pulls his shot, and a bear can cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. take no chances here as a mistake can be far to costly. the experience can be extremely rewarding and worthwhile, or tragic. also, screw the politics, like i said the experience can be extremeley rewarding. my son at twelve was an experienced shooter but i still watched as he missed his first deer four times (she was very obliging) at a range of seventy yards.

Your post was edited for recommending to do something illegal. Please read the rules again if you need to.

whapitiwhacker thanks for the link. Very cool pics and awsome story. That 375 looks incredibly big for a 9yr old. Glad it worked out for them. they will remember that hunt forever.

The 180's or 220's will be fine unless the Grizz has been online and found out that it's supposed to be impervious to anything less than a .577 T-Rex
LOL :D

Are you sure you want to go through with this? If he gets a grizzly at only age 12, you probably condemn him to needing to hunt Africa by the time he is 30, and off-planet by the time he is 50. What a rat-race his life may be to pay for all that! :)

Seriously, though, I don't have the experience with the premium bullets to offer any advice on that, so I'll just wish you good luck for the hunt.
God only hope. If captain Kirk can screw alien #####es... your son can too....

you are right they are sierras that i have in 220, probably going to lean towards the ttsx's though. Thanks

I think you've chosen a good bullet with the 180 gr TTSX. Many grizzlies have succumbed to a .30 caliber 180 gr bullet at 2500 from a number of different cartridges, including the .308. I load my wife's '06 carbine with 180 gr TSXs to just over 2500 fps, and she is both confident and competant with that rifle. I put much faith in that bullet and in her ability to deal with a dangerous polar bear while alone, and I'm quite happy to have her back me up.

When I carry my .30/06, true to my preference for heavy for caliber bullets, I use the 240 gr Woodleigh at just over 2300. My wife's 1:12 barrel won't stabilize these though, and I have absolute confience in the 180 gr TSX. The TTSX like the TSX is a great choice, because it will absolutely not break up on a big bone and the 1.5X expansion combined with the high weight retention, ensures deep, straight line penetration even on quartering shots. As far as I can tell, you guys are good to go.

I'm with the guys who say the 165gr TSX or TTSX is the way to go. I've penetrated a ~460lbs black bear from stem to stern (including exit wounds) with 2- 100gr TSX bullets from a .25-06. I wouldn't be too worried at all about the capabilities of the 165gr Barnes...
