Problem is most don't...

It's up to the individual to take advantage of knowledge available. Nobody on the internet can be responsible for someone misinterpreting knowledge.

Will the .308 kill a moose at 400 yards? Yes it will.

Is the .308 dependant on proper bullet selection and proper bullet placement, just like any other cartridge? Absolutely.

Does reading the above on the intraweb qualify a person to just go out and shoot a moose at 400 yards with a .308 ? Absolutely not. But they shouldn't be doing it with a .300 Magnum, either.

Sights?

I only read some of the comments, but didn't see if anyone mentioned iron sites or shootin with a optical scope at 300yd. Would anyone like to clarify thier postion. My 99f 308 has placed a bullet in the same hole 2out 3 shots with redfield tang site on yer shootin 180 win soft point so I think if i had to shoot 300 yds at a moose with that 99 I could hit if I could see it. I have to try it this year at the range.

I use 180 grain ammo and at 300 it definatly has enough oomph to do the job. But my 308 dosen't have a very long barrel so 300-350 yds is the max i will shoot, if i know longer shots may come up i use my .270

While I have no doubts that the .308 can do the job required on a moose at 400m+ I definitely have some doubts about my ability to send it to the right address. 400m is a long way especially when you are using an improvised rest and (if you are me) estimating the range by eye and other cues (but not a rangefinder). Generally I won't shoot at anything over 200m or so unless conditions are absolutely perfect like a broadside presentation with little brush in the way. Where in Ontario are you going to find yourself aiming at a moose much farther than that anyway? Most times I have been hunting I find that the range gets continually stretched with every retelling. My buddy's perfectly respectable 140m (paced off so rough estimate) kill has grown to about 300m in the past couple of years... Sometimes he forgets that I was the one with him that day!

Jeff;)

I have field dressed a medium sized moose that was shot with a 308 Win - 180gr at 425 yards. Hit twice, both in the lungs. Bullets did not expand at all. Could have been reloaded and shot again.

Moose walked 20 yards, laid down and bled out.

From this I concluded that 300 would be the max range to shoot.

BTW regarding the above post... My buddy's moose was shot with a .25/06 and went down like it was a .375H&H. Or a 30/06, 7mm, 270, 338WM, 30/30, or any other centerfire cartridge over about a quarter inch in diameter... I love watching the 300-338 magnum boys rub their shoulder and explain that the deer "jumped the string" on their supersonic bullets and that's why they missed.

Jeff

300 yards. Depending on a bunch of variables, I might go to 400 but is the target still or moving, offhand shot or rested etc make the decison for me as well as gut feel of making the shot cleanly.

One of the biggest problems is that a lot of people do not know how far 300 yds actually is... I have witnessed a number of stories about the long range kill shots, depending upon your georgraphical area (eg; western Cda or northern Ont bush) 75% + are actually kills under the 100-150 yd range in N/O. Invest in a range finder and you will see what I mean.
I would be hard pressed to take a shot at 300 yds using a 150 grain bullet for Moose. My pers preference is 7.92mm x 57 using full load euro; "J" 197gr bullets.

what's wrong with you a 308 for hunting moose

It really pisses me off when I see and here about hunters using small arms to hunt a big game. Moose are not like people they don't lay down or give up living that easy.I have seen a lot of moose laying dead unfound by there shooters deep in the bush shame, shame on a lot of you. Big game hunting comes with responsibility! Use the proper caliber

Depends on how comfortable you are shooting your rifle. I can shoot my .308 rifle out to 300 yards comfortably but it depends on what I'm shooting off of....or not of of. Off hand 100-150 yards a solid tree or stand...300 yards no problem only I don't usually see anything past 50 yards so a shot out past 100 yards isn't likely to happen anytime soon. I've shot grouse at distances further then I have large game :D

the 308win kills moose just fine its poor shot placement that makes animals run off and die!!!
