.308 hmmm,

At what range would you take a moose with a .308 you are competent with

A hole is a hole .Grampa hunted moose with a 22. The problem is 1 most hunters only shoot there guns twice a yr once to see if they hit paper the second time is when they play god out in the bush.I think what we should be talking about is not how great we are but how inadequate we are. Paper stapled to a back stop will be there after you pull the trigger but were will mister moose be .

So are you commenting on hunter marksmanship or a cartridge here?:confused:

And some people are hung up on whether a .308 win will kill a Moose? Or even a deer at 400 yds?
 
Two things my grandfather told me about hunting and shooting that I know to be true.
distance multiplys error and big guns don't make up for poor woodsman ship.
 
i am struggling with both.. My dad has a saying would you rather get punched buy a light weight boxer or a heavy weight. I have seen a moose shot with a 30.30 it killed it just fine the shot was 50yrds standing ,broad side. the lady drilled it right through the heart it walked into the bush about 100yrds .S0 will a 308 kill a moose yes. but 400yrds.I think we just like to brag how great a shot we are.Instead of bragging how far we shot how about how close we got to get that shot.When we bow hunt moose we try to get as close as 40yrds.
 
for me 300 and under although I haven't had to shoot over 100 for my last 3 draws, one was in bow range, the other 2 75-80 yds. When I was a youngin' my granpa told astory of a guy in thier moose camp shooting a bull moose at 50 paces between the eyes with a .308 win and the bullet just richocheted off his snout took some skin the bull shook his head and ran away. This would have been in the 60's and could be b.s , always made for a funny camp story.

If the bullet hits the same place and expands and punctures both lungs, what difference does it make if it was launched form 400 or 40 yards?

The better fighter is not the not the hardest hitter, instead it is the fighter that practices the most and understand their abilities and limitations.

If both knock you out and the goal was to knock you out..., not much difference
 
I am pretty sure that if the shooter is up to it, a 308 is still carrying enough jam to punch a hole in the blood pump out to 400. Once you put a hole in the heart, the animal is dead.

My grandpa killed many a moose with his 30-30. A 30-30 at 100 (1100 Ft.-Lb, based on a 170 gr FP ) is pretty similar to a 308 at 500 (1049 ft lbs, based on a 165 gr SP) Pair that up with a premium bullet, and a guy who knows how to shoot, and you have a dead moose.

When I get older and my body isn't capable of handling the recoil of my 300RUM/375RUM any longer I'll probably move down to a 30-06 as well...

Doesn't mean its the best due all out there means I'll adjust to what my body is capable of.

I've already started putting that 30-06 rifle together it is a Rem 700 LSS, Guntech shortened the barrel to 20" and adjusted the trigger I glass bedded the action then installed a Kwik-Klip mag conversion and my next move is to get Guntech to install a NEGC Masterpiece banded front ramp when I get around to ordering it.

I will switch scope mounts to Leupold QRW 2 piece bases and QRW quick detachable rings and remount my VX3 2.5-8 B&C scope when I remove the scope I will mount a XS Sights low Weaver backup ghost ring sight which will give me a sight radius of appr 25".
