.308 hmmm,

At what range would you take a moose with a .308 you are competent with

Personally, I don't need an uber magnum super whipper snipper with some over sized barrel and bright shiny action to get my game animals!!! PERIOD!

Instead of getting faster, harder hitting guns,..some people should get some skills!
 
Moose with a 25-05 past 100 yards is a joke unless your shooting him in the head. A 308 will have 1200 - 1600 fpe at 400 yards with 150 - 180 gr bullets. If you have practiced at that range it is capable.
 
Seal: To be fair, the Poll is for 400 Yards and LESS.

Just so we're clear on my earlier posts (and to make CC smile), I don't think there are many hunters that would go beyond 400 yds with a .308 and even then ***INSERT DISCLAIMER HERE*** it's under ideal conditions ***AS STATED PREVIOUSLY***.

To ensure the appeasement of the uber magnum gods, I do have a 7mm Rem. Mag that I hunt moose with and would definitely take a shot beyond 400 with that rifle (as I have in the past) and be 100% successful.

I have a .308 as a back up and a .270 for backup backup.

The poll was originally regarding what range at which you could bag a Moose with a .308 and be competent at. Not what caliber is best suited etc. Assumptions made in answering:

1. Animal is in the clear.
2. Load is adequate (180gr or better).
3. Wind is minimal.
4. Visibility is good (nothing between you and said moose).
5. Broadside shot - I mean really - 9" kill zone is not so hard at that distance....
6. You're not standing (prone or supported shot).

Given those conditions, I would be 100% go on a kill shot at 400 yrds and less.

BTW: My .308 is a Win. mod 70 (pre 64) in .308 and my 7mm RM is a Winchester Model 70 SuperGrade. My .270 - well I'm sure you can figure that out from my handle.

All have good glass - Both Winchesters have Leupold glass and the Voere has Simmons.

If the shot were iron sights - NEVER would I take a shot beyond 150 yards - too much to go wrong.

Im not really advocating what exactly what the .308 can or can't do.

The assumtions you have stated, well, I figures they not need to be stated.

1. Animal is in the clear....well I don't shoot at animals that aren't, and at 400 yrds, I figure many others don't.

2. Load is adequate...again...

3. Wind is minimal,.. this is a different one. Knowing the limitations should address this.

4. Nothing between you and the moose...;) I hate shooting when there are schoolbusses driving between me and the moose.. (seriously, this one?)

5. Broad shot, 9" ...knowing your limitations, and that yours aren't necessarily others.

6. You are not standing... (????) or eating pie

I'll add some...

7. You are not on your cell phone at the time...

8. The anaimal is the right ### for your tag

9. You see no other hunters near the moose.

10. It is not night time.
